Monk has no concerns over Bony
Garry Monk has no concerns regarding Wilfried Bony’s commitment to Swansea.
The Ivorian striker netted 25 goals in his debut season for the Swans, but just a year after joining from Vitesse Arnhem, he was heavily linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium over the summer months.
Monk had warned it would take an ‘astronomical fee’ for the club to part company with the striker, but the transfer window closed with Bony remaining in Wales.
Despite the constant speculation, Monk is delighted with commitment and determination the 25-year-old has shown to Swansea.
“Wilf commits very well, he is focused on what we want to do,” Monk told the South Wales Evening Post.
“If he was coming in and wandering about disillusioned, we would have a problem.
“But he does not do that, he comes in, commits and is at one with the group. That is all I can ask for.”
Bony has yet to score this term, but Monk is confident he will rediscover his touch in front of goal very soon.
“All strikers get frustrated when they are not scoring, but for me it is just about what you are contributing to the team,” he added.
“Wilf has not scored yet but his contribution in terms of hold-up play, winning the ball, bringing others into the game and fighting for the team can be bigger than a goal sometimes.
“A lot came through him against West Brom – he was strong and allowed us to get up the pitch.
“For me as a manager, that is more important than someone scoring a goal because that is something we have worked on all week and you see it happening.
“All I worry about is the team, I do not worry about individual targets.”
