Coupe de France round-up

by Laurent Picard , 18 March 2009

Top flight sides Rennes and Grenoble both qualified for the French cup’s semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

GF38 brilliantly knocked Monaco out of the Coupe de France thanks to a well-deserved 2-0 win over Monaco, in their splendid Stade des Alpes.

Former France international Daniel Moreira broke the deadlock 13 minutes into the game, after collecting a special delivery over the top from Laurent Battles and beating ASM keeper Stephane Ruffier with a low shot.

And Nassim Akrour killed the game off in the 54th minute when he received a clever pass from Laurent Courtois and hit the back of the empty net.

In the second game of the evening, Rennes comfortably dumped underdogs Rodez out of the cup, courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Stade de la Route de Lorient.

Newcastle and Everton target Stephane Mbia opened the scoring for Stade Rennais on the half-hour mark from six yards out after the visitors’ fragile defence failed to clear a Jerome Leroy corner.

Jimmy Briand added a second after an hour of play when he headed home Moussa Sow’s centre from 12 yards.

Toulouse and Guingamp both qualified for the semi-finals on Tuesday night.
