Boys from Brazil end French hopes

by Robin Hackett , 16 April 2009

Brazilian duo Luiz Adriano and Fernandinho helped Shakhtar Donetsk to a smash-and-grab Uefa Cup triumph over Marseille.

Marseille went into the second leg at the Stade Velodrome looking to overturn their 2-0 defeat in Ukraine but, despite dominating proceedings, they were beaten 2-1 on the night as they went out 4-1 on aggregate.

The Ligue 1 leaders were completely on top during the opening half hour, but 23-year-old midfielder Fernandinho scored against the run of play as he raced down the left before catching goalkeeper Steve Mandanda unawares with an impudent effort from an impossible angle.

The left the home side needing four goals to progress. Hatem Ben Arfa gave them hope two minutes before half-time when, following Mamadou Niang’s cross, he was able to fire in the rebound after his header was saved by Andrei Pyatov.

However, despite dominating the second half – hitting the bar and having a Mamadou Samassa effort ruled out for a foul – Marseille were unable to close the gap.

And, in injury time, Luiz Adriano slipped the ball through Mandanda’s legs following a long ball.

Shakhtar will face Dynamo Kiev in an all-Ukrainian tie while Hamburg take on Werder Bremen in an all-German match as they vie for a place in the final.
