FAI Ford Cup Round-Up

by setanta.com staff , 12 June 2009

The Third Round of the FAI Ford Cup threw up some interesting results on Friday and Saturday.

Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, Derry City, Dundalk, Sporting Fingal, St Patrick's Athletic, and UCD all progressed through to the next round after collecting wins.

Cork drew with Sligo in the only all Premier Division clash on Friday, while Shelbourne were held to a draw by Crumlin United on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Shamrock Rovers drew with Drogheda United, but there were wins for Athlone Town, Galway United, Tralee Dynamos, and Waterford United.

Bohemians 8-1 Mayfield United

There was no sympathy from Pat Fenlon's men as they cruised to a comfortable home win over 10-man Mayfield.

The vistiors from Cork got off to a terrible start when Stephen Hurley put the ball inside his own net inside the opening ten minutes. He would later recieve his marching orders.

Goals from Anthony Murphy, Jason Byrne (2), Glen Crowe (2), Neale Fenn, and Graham Carey set them on their way to a crowd-pleasing win.

However, the away team were to celebrate at least once when Anthony Wolfe fired in a penalty on 77 minutes.

Bray Wanderers 2-1 Bluebell United

Despite having Chris Shields sent off early on, Bray had enough quality to drag themselves through to the next round.

The Seagulls have a tendency to make sloppy mistakes, although they are a very good counter attacking team too, which sometimes bails them out.

With a strong line-up and home advantage, they were clear favourites to get past their Dublin-based opponents and looked to have sealed the win when Paul Byrne netted on 65 minutes.

On 73 minutes, Bluebell were given a penalty, but Ciaran Quinn failed to make it count. Gary McCabe wasn't so wasteful with his spot-kick for Bray on 86 minutes as he hammered in the winner, before Andrew Clearly got one for the away team.

Cork City 2-2 Sligo Rovers

Twice Cork took the lead at Turner's Cross and twice they were pegged back by Sligo in a fiercely contested encounter.

It took just 13 minutes for Shane Duggan to stake his claim for a regular place in the team with a well taken goal, but Steve Feeney hit back four minutes later for The Bit O'Red.

The home crowd were celebrating again when striker Denis Behan fired in on 35 minutes to send the hosts in at the break with a slender lead.

A late strike from Raffael Cretaro, who was superb all game, then got Sligo back into it to force a replay.

Derry City 6-0 Ballymun United

The Candystripes cruised to a 6-0 battering of Ballymun United at The Brandywell to book their place in the next round.

Aaron Nash scored the fastest ever hat-trick at the Folyeside stadium when introduced as a replacement for Sammy Morrow and the youngster certainly turned a few heads with his rapid firing.

An own goal from Ballymun's Liam Byrne actually handed an early lead to Stephen Kenny's side before Mark McChrystal made it 2-0.

Then Nash blasted in his quick-fire hat-trick to leave David Scullion to provide the final hammer blow.

Limerick FC 0-1 St Patrick's Athletic

Anthony Costigan was the hero for St Pat's as they escaped from Limerick with a narrow victory in what was a tense cup clash.

Jeff Kenna welcomed back Stuart Byrne and Mark Quigley to his starting eleven and also handed a start to winger Bobby Ryan, who has been out for a number of months through injury.

While the host's defence stood firm for the most part with James Wunsch and Brian O'Callaghan standing out, they eventually slipped up to let Costigan in.

The young attacker came off the bench to get the vital goal on 68 minutes and ensure that the Inchicore outfit continue their good run of form.

Mervue United 1-3 Dundalk

Dundalk have been considered potential challengers for this competition and its easy to see why after they beat First Division Mervue United on Friday.

Ger Rowe has showed signs of getting back to his best recently and his opening goal on 3 minutes will surely have delighted manager Sean Connor.

Shaun Kelly then put the County Louth team further in front just before ten minutes. Then Dave Golbey did one pull back for the home side on 64 minutes.

However, Declan O'Brien was in the right place at the right time to finish things off with a goal on 80 minutes.

Finn Harps 0-3 Galway United

Vinny Faherty scored a brace to help Galway secure a deserved victory over Finn Harps at Finn Park on Saturday.

The young striker found the back of the net after 16 minutes and then got his second of the game on 50 minutes.

After conceding that early goal, things went from bad to worse for Harps when Michael Funston was sent off.

Captain Jay O'Shea made sure of the win when he scored just 60 seconds after Faherty had got his second goal. The Tribesmen were just too strong for their First Division opponents.

Shamrock Rovers 1-1 Drogheda United

The second all Premier Division tie of the Third Round also ended in a draw after Conor Kenna earned a replay for Drogheda on Saturday afternoon.

It was the home side that started the better and they took the lead on 7 minutes when Sean O'Connor chipped goalkeeper Paul Skinner.

Drogheda eventually fought their way back into it, but by the time Kenna scored they were on top with Gavin Whelan and Jamie Duffy coming close with efforts.

The Hoops had Pat Flynn sent off when he got involved in an incident with Kenna, although by that stage it was clear that Alan Mathews' team had done enough to earn a replay.
