FAI Cup: Weekend reaction

by Niamh O'Mahony , 15 June 2009

With replays taking place as soon as Monday evening, setanta.com rounds up the best of the reaction from the weekend's FAI Cup action.

“I would have taken a draw beforehand.

"It’ll be difficult for us on Tuesday but if we play with better application from the start of the game, then we’ll see what happens,” Drogheda United boss Alan Mathews said after watching his side’s 1-1 draw at Shamrock Rovers.

Michael O’Neill, however, was not impressed by the final result, saying: “What we’ve done again, typically, is that we’ve given them a chink of light, and we’ve done that again tonight.

“We were disappointed not to win, but given the problems we had on the night, we’ll go up to Drogheda on Tuesday and hopefully we’ll get the right result up there.”

Crumlin United boss Martin Loughran, meanwhile, is not happy to have to play his club’s FAI Cup third round replay against Shelbourne on Monday night, without the services of two of his players - Paul McCabe and Daniel Loughran, who are on international duty with Ireland’s amateur side.

“If a League of Ireland player is called up for Ireland, then his club can request that their league game is called up while he is away,” he told The Irish Star.

“I think it’s unfair on the lads and the club that we must play this game without Paul and Daniel.”

Galway United boss Ian Foster has hailed his team’s 3-0 win over Finn Harps as “a good lift”. He added: “It took the focus off the League and we went into the game hoping to win, to play well and to create plenty of opportunities.”

Paul Cook, meanwhile, was satisfied with his Sligo players after their battling 2-2 with Cork City at Turner’s Cross and is hopeful of another good display in Tuesday night’s replay, despite his continuing injury crisis.

“The players will show the same commitment and desire that they did in the first game. We may not win, but we will show desire. We don’t like getting beaten and we have a policy that we want to entertain. It might blow up in our face one day, but we’ll keep at it.”

Bray Wanderers boss Eddie Gormley was angered by the sending off of Chris Shields – the player being shown a red card as he was stretchered from the pitch with a back and hip injury - in the 2-1 win over Bluebell United.

“I was more than disgusted in the tackle that injured him. He was only trying to get the player off him who had just come through the back of him using his legs.

“He ended up going to hospital for an X-ray. I thought the sending off was harsh because their man wasn’t even booked."
