Bohs handed tough European test

by Gareth Maher , 22 June 2009

Bohemians will face Red Bull Salzburg in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Champions League.

The League of Ireland champions were not seeded for the draw in Nyon on Monday due to not featuring in a European ranking tournament for the past few years.

They were knocked out of the Intertoto Cup last season when they lost on away goals to FK Riga of Latvia, but they are a much stronger team now and will feel confident of doing better in Europe this term.

A trip to Austria now awaits them as they bid to bring their good form onto the European stage and boost their financial status by progressing through the qualifying rounds.

The Gypsies were drawn away first and will play their game on either the 14th or 15th of July with the return leg to follow on either the 21st or 22nd of July.

Meanwhile, the draw for the Europa League qualifiers was also made on Monday with three Irish sides involved in that competition.

Sligo Rovers were entered into the First Round of qualifying and will face Albanian side Vllaznia, who are based in Shkoder, on the 2nd and 9th of July.

In the Second Round of qualifying, Derry City will take on Skonto of Latvia, while St Patrick's Athletic will play either Valletta of Malta or Keflavik of Iceland.

Those matches will be played on the 16th and 23rd of July.
