A first win for Offaly over Kilkenny since the All-Ireland final of 1998 was the biggest news from Sunday's GAA, with the Faithful county edging out Brian Cody's Cats by 1-16 to 1-13 in the Walsh Cup SH quarter-final.
Ger Healion goaled for Offaly, for whom Daniel Currams and Rory Hannify shone, while Martin Boram’s first-half Cats goal and a haul of 0-4 from RIchie Hogan did not prove enough in the end for the All-Ireland holders.
In the other Walsh Cup quarter-final, Galway hurlers overcame Laois but required extra-time before seeing off the O'Moore men by 4-24 to 2-16. Two Richie Cummins goals proved vital in the additional minutes. Ger Farragher hit 1-9 with Joe Gantley also goaling, while Willie Hyland and John Rowney got the O’Moore County goals.
And Wexford were 2-16 to 1-13 winners over UCD. Stephen Banville and Jim Berry got the Model County’s goals, though they had Darren Stamp sent off before Cian Waldron’s late UCD green flag.
In the Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final, Davy Fitzgerald's Waterford scored a 12-point win over his native county of Clare (1-17 to 0-8). Maurice Shanahan hit 0-7 for the Deise, with Eoin Kelly getting 1-1.
In football, a star-studded DCU side accounted for Meath (0-16 to 0-13) in the O'Byrne Cup semi-final, as Wexford’s Shane Roche hit eight points. The other last four game saw Louth come from behind to beat Kildare 1-16 to 0-14, Declan Byrne with the killer goal for the Wee men.
The Connacht FBD saw wins for Galway, Sligo, Sligo IT and Mayo.
Joe Kernan’s Tribesmen set up a semi-final with Mayo as Michael Meehan got a goal and Nicky Joyce hit 1-6 in 1-16 to 0-13 victory over GMIT. The other Group B game saw Sligo overcome Leitrim by 1-12 to 0-9, the Yeats County goal belted home by Aidan Marron to seal the win.
Group A saw Mayo beat Roscommon by 1-9 to 0-8, with 1-6 of the men in green and red’s scores coming from Mark Ronaldson. Sligo IT had a narrow 1-7 to 0-9 win over NUIG Galway, Alan Freeman’s goal the telling score.
