Is Formula 1 about to implode?

by Gary Anderson , 08 June 2009

What a complete turn around in fortunes Formula 1 is seeing at the moment with underdogs winning races and the dominant teams of the past decade floundering at the back.

The combined driving skill of Jenson Button and the brains of Ross Brawn have set new standards in what is achievable if you just put your head down and believe in your ability.

Red Bull are biting at their heels, but as for last year’s big boys in Ferrari and BMW - they are now midfield teams and on a good day just about make it into the points.

As for McLaren, well what can I say? They have facilities, manpower and a budget second to none and yet they are dicing with Force India - a team which believe me deserves all the credit we can give them but are still a small, low-budget effort besides the rest.

You would think that with all this going on it would be great for the sport, that the press would be making the most of the change, and that the column inches would be growing.

Things should never be more positive for Formula 1 with regard to the future. Well, once again - between the governing body, the FIA, the teams’ organisation, FOTA, and the commercial rights holder, FOM - they have managed to destroy any positive effect the change in the running order has had. It is now all about backroom bickering and the unavoidable internal implosion.

We all agree that Formula 1 needs a couple of new teams to strengthen the grid and allow new drivers like A1GP championship winner Adam Carroll the opportunity to show their skills.

This budget cap thing is a great idea if carried out correctly, but it must be done in conjunction with the manufacturers who are the high spend teams. Cutting back from a €350 million budget to an €85 million budget cannot be done over night. It is not like a light switch - it needs careful planning and will require at least a three-year implementation period.

The problem is we seem to have gone past any form of consultation between the three parties above and it is mainly now about individual egos. I don’t see any one of them willing to bite the bullet and alter their thinking for the good of the sport.

This, for me, is quite sad as I have be involved in and seen Formula 1 progress from taking an F1 car to Monaco on a trailer towed by a transit van with me driving to what it is today. To stand back and watch while egos destroy what has consumed most of my working life, and is a great sport to millions, really is beyond belief.

We should get an indication on June 12 who has won the battle but for me there has been too much damage done and there will, in reality, be only one loser and that is Formula 1.
