Setanta Sports Cup confirmed for 2014
Setanta Sports have renewed their sponsorship of the Setanta Sports Cup for a further three years to 2016.
The Irish sports broadcaster have been the sponsors of the all-Ireland competition since its inception in 2005 and Monday’s announcement has been broadly welcomed by the Setanta Sports Cup Tournament Committee which is composed of representatives from the FAI and the IFA.
“I am very happy that Setanta have shown their faith in this unique competition by agreeing to remain as our sponsors for a further three years. The competition has grown in stature since it began in 2005 and clubs north and south are looking forward to the ninth version starting in February,” Setanta Sports Cup Tournament Committee chairman Milo Corcoran stated.
“We are delighted to renew our position as sponsor and broadcaster of the Setanta Sports Cup. It’s a tournament that is very dear to us at Setanta and has been embraced by fans north and south,” Brian Quinn, Marketing Operations Director of Setanta Sports commented.
“In summer we announced a deal to bring the BT Sport and ESPN channels into our Setanta Sports pack in the south and this has given us a platform to be able to return as the sponsor and broadcaster and to continue to invest in Irish football.”
In a change to the competition, the 2014 renewal will see four clubs from the Danske Bank League compete against four clubs from the Airtricity League.
The League winners and runners up, north and south of the border, as well as the League Cup winners and Senior Challenge Cup winners were all invited to take part, but Irish Premiership clubs Cliftonville and Linfield have opted out of the competition.
Instead, Crusaders, Glentoran, Coleraine and Ballinamallard United will represent the Irish League, while St Patrick’s Athletic, Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers will represent the Airtricity League of Ireland.
2005 winners Linfield have opted out due to the reduction in prize money, with Cliftonville citing a busy fixture schedule for their decision to withdraw.
The draw for the 2014 Setanta Sports Cup will take place on Wednesday, December 11 at the Aviva Stadium with games set to commence in February over home and away legs.
The final is scheduled for Saturday, May 10.
