Brilliant Workforce the Derby hero

by Setanta Staff , 05 June 2010

The inexperienced Workforce stormed to a remarkable win in the Investec Derby to provide Ryan Moore with his second Classic in successive days.

Moore had never won a Classic before steering Snow Fairy to victory in the Investec Oaks on Friday but the champion jockey did not have to wait long before fulfilling a lifetime ambition by winning the Derby.

With three furlongs remaining Ballydoyle pacemaker At First Sight was well clear of the field but Moore brought Workforce with a brilliant run to ease into the lead at the furlong pole. Once in front he pulled on to win the Debry by seven lengths.

Surprisingly it was At First Sight that held on gamely for second from the fast-finishing Rewilding.

Sir Michael Stoute, chasing his sixth Epsom Derby winner, had expressed his fears over the King's Best colt's inexperience but the Newmarket handler need not have worried as his charge rewrote history by becoming the first horse ever to have been beaten in the Dante and go on to win the blue riband.

Seamie Heffernan battled to take the lead from Azmeel after the break and it did not take long before he was controlling the pace aboard At First Sight. Indeed, he was well clear of the field as they raced uphill and had increased his lead to ten lengths on the run down Tattenham Hill.

Rounding Tattenham Corner he was a long way clear to give bookmakers hope of a 100-1 winner, but the chasing pack began to get to work.

All eyes were on Jan Vermeer to see when he would make his move and, while he looked to be travelling very well for Johnny Murtagh, it was Workforce who emerged from the pack.

He closed with every stride and had soon seized the lead before bounding clear to complete the 12 furlongs in a course record time.

The battle for second saw Rewilding throw down a late challenge to At First Sight but the pacemaker held on brilliantly. Jan Vermeer, meanwhile, was fourth, some four lengths behind Rewilding.

"He had a really clean run, I was happy where I was in the race," Moore explained afterwards.

"We got a dream run and he quickened really well. The ground was fast enough for him, but he's a really good horse and I'm delighted with that.

"This is the most important race to me, it's great to ride for the boss and Prince Khalid (Abdullah, owner). It's really good day."

Stoute added: "The Dante didn't go as we wanted and it was unsatisfactory, but he was seriously good today.

"I'm delighted for Ryan. He's a confident lad, but after he missed Conduit's win in the Leger, I wanted to get the monkey (Classic win) off his back."
