Sevilla have confirmed they have received an approach from Arsenal for centre-back Sebastien Squillaci but a deal remains some way off.
The France international did not play in his side's Champions League play-off clash with Braga on Wednesday to fuel speculation he will leave the Spanish side before the transfer window closes.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants more defensive recruits after allowing Philippe Senderos, William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre to all leave the Emirates this summer, and he has been tracking Squillaci for several weeks.
Sevilla have revealed Arsenal made an offer but it did not match their valuation of the 30-year-old, which is thought to be in the region of £8million.
However, a fresh bid could be imminent as Wenger is reportedly very keen on securing the player's services.
"The player asked not to play because of the offer from such a big team but, for the moment, we believe the offer is insufficient and Squillaci is still a Sevilla player," said Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez.
