One of the longest standing records in world athletics fell on Sunday as David Rudisha broke the 800m world record in Berlin.

The Kenyan clocked a time 1 minute 41.09 seconds at the Olympic stadium, eclipsing the previous record of 1:41.11 by .02 of a second.

That record was set by Kenyan-bornWilson Kipketer of Denmark on August 24 1997, in Cologne.

The 21-year-old, who was world junior champion in 2006, was paced for the first lap by Sammy Tangui and then set off for home on his own to set the new fastest time.
