Kenyan David Rudisha has broken the 800m world record, just over a week after he claimed the record himself.

Rudisha ran a time of 1.41.01 in Rieti, Italy, nine tenths of a second faster than the time he ran last Sunday in Berlin.

The previous record, held by Kenyan-born Dane Wilson Kipketer, had stood since 1997.

Up to this season Kudisha was relatively unknown outside of Africa. Winner of this year’s African Championships, the 21-year-old only reached the semi-finals at last year’s World Championships.
