Alan Pardew says that there is no chance that Steve Harper will be allowed to leave Newcastle United on loan.
The long-serving Magpies goalkeeper, so often the bridesmaid to Shay Given in his long spell at the club, has once again found himself demoted from the first team at St James’ Park.
After an injury to Harper, Dutchman Tim Krul is the man who has been first choice in the Premier League all season for Pardew’s unbeaten Newcastle. Former Charlton Athletic star Rob Elliott made his debut in the Carling Cup win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, meaning that Geordie Harper has not now featured for the club since April.
However, amid speculation that Harper may be loaned out, Pardew rebuffed: “There is no situation with Steve. Harps and Rob are here as back-up to Tim at the moment because Tim has the jersey. It is as simple as that.
“There is no chance of him going out on loan - none at all.”
A Demba Ba hat-trick saw Newcastle defeat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 on Saturday, as they continue to hold their own and sit fourth in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Elliott’s display in the Cup game – which went to extra-time as Forest equalised on three occasions – has earned some critics, but Pardew has defended his new boy and insisted that he has not had to have words.
He added: “I have not had to say anything to him. He is a very, very good goalkeeper.”
