Wilson rides the train

Mark Wilson admits he is enjoying a purple patch in his career after winning the delayed Phoenix Open in a play-off on Monday.

The 36-year-old turned professional in 1997 but did not win a PGA Tour title for the first 10 years of his career.

Victory in the Waste Management Phoenix Open was his second success this season after winning in Hawaii just three weeks ago and took his season's earnings past the £2million mark in just the second month of action.

Frost delays on Thursday and Friday meant that the tournament had to be completed on Monday, and Wilson and Jason Dufner both finished on 18-under par after 72 holes and required a play-off to settle the contest.

"I'm ecstatic," he said. "I guess I'm in all the majors now and I'm just riding the train. I don't get down on myself and I'm playing the best golf of my life."

The Wisconsin-born star was 237th in the world prior to his Hawaii success and he is now ranked 51st with passage into all four majors, and he admitted that he asked for divine intervention after watching his American Football team, the Green Bay Packers, scoop the biggest prize in that sport on Sunday night.

"I didn't sleep great," he added. "It was probably the excitement with the Super Bowl and the uncertainty of today and I just kept trying to rely on God to give me the peace that I needed to get through it.

"I prayed out there a lot."
