McGeeney calls for greater respect

Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney feels inter-county managers and players do not get the respect they deserve and he wants the situation to change sooner rather than later.

The role of inter-county managers has been brought sharply into focus by the publishing of the GAA's Amateur Status and Payments to Team Managers with director general Paraic Duffy calling for the issue to be addressed immediately.

County chiefs gathered in Croke Park on Saturday to discuss the paper with a deadline of February 24 for them to report back to the GAA.

McGeeney has not read the report but he believes players and managers are criticised harshly and he wants those outside the sport to give them greater respect for the hard work they put in on a weekly basis.

"I didn't get to read it. We don't be given it. Was it put in the papers? It wasn't sent out to me," he is quoted as saying in the Irish Daily Star.

"We work hard, we work harder than a lot of people realise, probably who give opinions on it without realising.

"I see people talking about inter-county players and writing reports on them and writing reports in inter-county managers and yet none of them seen to know what they actually do or give.

"I probably would suggest that people do a wee bit more homework before they comment on it. That would be the only comment I have on it."
