Lyons: Dublin can drive on

by Michelle Fortune , 01 February 2012

Former Dublin manager Tommy Lyons believes Pat Gilroy's men can drive on and achieve further glory after getting the 'monkey off their back' in 2011.

Lyons was one of the men who tried and failed to lead Dublin to All-Ireland glory until Pat Gilroy succeeded in producing a panel capable of lifting the Sam Maguire.

It took Gilroy three years to fulfil his ambition but Lyons does not believe Dublin will have to wait another 16 years for their next All-Ireland title.

Indeed, the Mayo native has tipped Gilroy's troops to be in the shake-up for the foreseeable future.

"I think Dublin have it in them to win another couple over the next three or four years. Whether they can go back to back that seems to be impossible from the past," Lyons is quoted as saying in the Irish Daily Star.

"Very good Tyrone and Kerry teams have failed to do it, but maybe if they got the ting going, they have a nice Leinster championship draw and if they got into the final it's four games.

"We always talk about Kerry and Cork only have four games to play. Not being disparaging to anybody in Leinster, but Dublin look like if they keep their heads anyway right they will get to a Leinster final without having to peak."

Lyons believes Dublin will go on to enjoy further success having ended their long wait for the All-Ireland title.

"I always say if you get to enough semi-finals and finals - although it hasn't proved to be the case for Dublin - but now they have that monkey off their back," he added.

"Dublin got the rub of the green last year. They hadn't got it for the previous number of years.

"The confidence levels individually and collectively having won could drive them on further."
