Munster sign Downey

Northampton Saints centre James Downey is to join Munster at end of the current season.


Downey has been a regular starter for Northampton since he moved to the Aviva Premiership at the start of the 2007-08 season and so far he has made 135 appearances for the club, scoring 12 tries.

The 30-year-old started his career in Leinster before moving to Connacht for two seasons. He also a season with Munster head of his move to Northampton and he has signed a two-year deal to return to the Irish province.

"James is a quality player who has been on our radar for some time now," Munster head coach Tony McGahan said.

"We've seen at first hand, on several occasions in recent times in the Heineken Cup exactly what he has to offer and believe that his style and his attitude can only enhance our squad."
