Pro-Am victory for Mickelson

Phil Mickelson staged a brilliant fight back to claim the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the 40th PGA Tour victory of his career.

Mickelson started the day six shots behind overnight leader Charlie Wi but as the South Korean dropped four shots early on Mickelson carded a flawless eight-under-par 64 to finish on 17-under-par.

He had to wait in the clubhouse to discover if his effort was enough and although Wi tried his hardest he was unable to claw his way back into the lead, signing for a two-over 72, which left him two shots behind Mickelson.

"It just feels great to win this tournament," Mickelson told reporters. "It's a special place for me, Pebble Beach, and to have a win here, where my grandfather caddied, feels awesome.

"I felt like my game was so close heading into the season, and yet my scores didn't reflect how I felt I was playing.

"And to put it together this week, especially the final round, just feels terrific. It gives me a lot of confidence but also inspires me because I believe what I'm doing is correct and that I'm able to play some of my best golf."

Mickelson, playing alongside Tiger Woods, birdied the second and four holes to move level with the former world number one, but he continued his surge up the leaderboard with another birdie on the fifth, which was quickly followed by an eagle at the next.

Woods finished 11 shots behind Mickelson but the winner believes his former nemesis is getting close to his very best.

"Watching him play today, it can change in one week," Mickelson said. "He used to hook, you were waiting for it and now he's just striping it right at his target with a tiny little fade just like he used to do. And his iron play looked extremely sharp.

"I know the score wasn't what he wanted and I know he didn't putt the way he wanted to, but you could tell that he's really close. All it takes is one week."

Ricky Barnes took third, four shots behind Mickelson, with Aaron Baddeley a further shot back. Dustin Johnson and Kevin Na were six shots off the pace, while Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Ken Duke finished in a share of seventh, seven shots off the leader.
