Arsenal given hope in Melo drama

by Robin Hackett , 01 December 2008

Fiorentina may struggle to hold onto Arsenal target Felipe Melo, according to the player’s agent – but he says there is another major European club chasing the 25-year-old Brazilian.

The skilful midfielder, who previously played in Spain for Mallorca, Racing and Almeria, was recently warned by Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino that he would not be allowed to leave the club.

"We know of the interest from Arsenal, but the player has a contract until 2013 and the discussion ends there,” he told FutNet.

However, Melo’s agent, Jose Rodrigo Bastos, believes he could be on the move before too long as Arsenal are not the only side to show interest in the player.

“Felipe could become one of the great names of European football. Fiorentina have already taken steps to keep him by improving his contract,” he said in The Daily Mail.

“Apart from Arsenal, another powerhouse of European football has shown interest in Felipe.

“I believe that if he continues to play at these high levels then Fiorentina will have difficulty in retaining him.”
