Harry: Gilberto's got to go

by Tom Adams , 19 December 2008

Harry Redknapp has signalled the end of Gilberto’s career at Tottenham following the Brazilian’s disappointing performance in Thursday’s Uefa Cup draw with Spartak Moscow.

Making his first start under Redknapp, Gilberto’s hesitation allowed Artem Dzjuba to score his first goal at White Hart Lane and Tottenham were in danger of exiting the competition before goals from Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone.

The defender, who joined Spurs from Hertha Berlin last January, has made only nine appearances in North London and Redknapp has revealed that Gilberto’s reaction to his substitution has convinced him to sell the 32-year-old.

"I think he was quite happy to come off at half-time," said Redknapp. "I don't think there is a way back for him here.

“I think the boy doesn't want to play here, that is the problem now.

"He's a nice guy but I don't think he feels confident playing here."

Tottenham face Newcastle United on Sunday and Redknapp has revealed that both Aaron Lennon and Modric are a doubt after picking up knocks during the game against the Russian side.

"I wanted to take Modric off at half-time," Redknapp added. "I only wanted to give him half a game because he is very important to us.

"He ended up with a tight hamstring and Aaron Lennon ended up with a tight groin. They could be struggling for Newcastle on Sunday.

"We'll have to see how they are, they won't train on Friday. It will be touch and go I think."
