by Setanta.com staff , 20 December 2008

Burton marched on with victory at Altrincham, York battled back to beat Ebbsfleet and Cambridge thumped Salisbury.

Altrincham 1 Burton 3

Greg Pearson netted his 15th goal of the season as Burton remained top of the Blue Square Premier with a victory at Altrincham.

Pearson – a summer signing from Bishop’s Stortford – opened the scoring in the 40th minute when he latched onto a pass from strike partner Shaun Harrad.

Dale Johnson fired Graham Heathcote’s men back into the match ten minutes into the second half when he fired home past Kevin Poole.

But Pearson ensured the league leaders retained top spot as he stroked home his second from the spot after keeper Stuart Coburn had felled Aaron Webster and John McGrath notched a third, four minutes from time.

Cambridge United 4 Salisbury 0

Cambridge kick-started their play-off charge with a thumping win against woeful Salisbury at The Abbey Stadium.

Robbie Willmott nodded home Cambridge’s opener in the 24th minute when he powered a bullet header past a despairing James Bittner in the Whites goal.

And on-loan Peterborough striker Scott Rendell doubled The U’s tally five minutes into the second half, powering home Chris Holdroyd’s cross.

Holdroyd got his own name on the scoresheet in the 61st minute before Courtney Pitt completed the rout just a minute later.

Wrexham 5 Eastbourne Borough 0

Marc Williams bagged a hat-trick as sorry Eastbourne were hit for five by a rampant Wrexham.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 44th minute as Williams found himself unmarked six yards from goal and coolly slotted home after good work from Sam Williamson.

The lead was doubled within two minutes of the restart as Jefferson Louis picked up a pass from Ashley Westwood and let fly from distance giving Eastbourne keeper Lee Hook no chance.

Williams doubled his tally for the afternoon in the 65th minute as he converted a Jonathan Brown cross from close range to seal the points.

The home side then scored two more in stoppage time as first Williams added his third from distance before Neil Taylor got in on the act with an equally impressive strike.

Grays Athletic 2 Barrow 1

Struggling Grays came from two goals down to secure a priceless win in their fight against relegation against Barrow.

Jason Walker put the FA Cup heroes in front after 28 minutes when he fired home from close range.

But Barry Cogan threw crisis club Grays a lifeline before the interval when he crashed home Ishmael Welsh’s cross from the right.

And Cogan edged Grays into the lead on the hour mark when smashed home Luke Hickie’s centre past the despairing dive of Alan Martin.

Mansfield 2 Weymouth 1

Jonathan D’Laryea’s last-gasp strike gave Mansfield all three points at Field Mill as The Stags came from behinsd to seal a crucial win.

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 20 minutes as Mansfield defender Alan O’Hare was adjudged to have fouled French forward Pierre Joseph-Dubois in the box.

Stuart Beavon stepped up and coolly dispatched the spot-kick for his ninth goal of the season in all competitions.

But Ahmed, on loan from Tranmere, restored parity for the struggling Stags at Field Mill – powering his header past Danny Knowles in the Weymouth net before D’Laryea nicked it at the death.

Crawley 2 Kidderminster 0

Michael Malcolm netted twice as Crawley dented ten-man Kidderminster’s play-off mission at Broadfield Stadium.

Kidderminster got off the worst possible start as Mark Creighton was shown red for a dangerous tackle on Jamie Cook in the 7th minute.

And Malcolm made The Red Devils’ numerical advantage count on the half hour mark when he turned home Simon Weatherstone’s cross.

Kidderminster continued to struggle against Steve Evans’ men but they were finally put to bed in the 71st minute when Malcolm bagged his second.

Forest Green 0 Kettering 2

Kettering continued their push for promotion with a comfortable victory over struggling Forest Green.

Alfie Potter gave The Poppies the lead in the 28th minute when Gareth Seddon fought the diminutive winger free in the box.

And former Hyde striker Seddon got his own name on the scoresheet see after when he slotted home a penalty after Darren Kempson had handballed in the area.

Lewes 0 Woking 2

Frenchman Wilfried Domoraud’s sparkling double inspired Woking to an invaluable away win over Lewes – only their second on the road all season.

Woking top scorer Domoraud put the visitors ahead on 42 minutes with his fifth of the season, slotting the ball home from the edge of the area into the bottom right-hand corner.

Cards keeper Simon Eastwood produced a stunning save to keep out Michael Standing’s swirling free-kick just after the hour mark.

Before Domoraud double the visitors’ lead on 70 minutes from close range to make the points safe and compound The Rooks’ misery at the foot of the table.

Oxford 1 Stevenage 1

David Bridges’ stunning first-half strike was not enough to secure all three points for Stevenage in this hard-fought draw at The Kassam Stadium.

Bridges unleashed an unstoppable 25-yard shot on 27 minutes to give Stevenage a deserved lead after Steve Morison had twice gone closer for the visitors.

But Oxford were back on level terms before the break when James Constable struck his third goal in four games from close range after good work from Adam Murray.

And Constable almost nicked the points for The U’s in the 87th minute but was denied by a miraculous save from former Tottenham stopper Chris Day.

York 3 Ebbsfleet United 1

York came from a goal down to see off the challenge of Ebbsfleet and record their first win since mid October.

Ebbsfleet went ahead in the 26th minute as Michael Gash found space just inside the box and fired low and hard beyond York stopper Michael Ingham.

The home side drew level on the hour as a Steven Hogg free kick was poorly dealt with and Adam Smith was on hand to turn the ball home before Richard Brodie gave them the lead with a powerful strike in the 67th minute.

And it was game set and match in the 77th minute as Onome Sodje was released by David McGurk and the striker rifled the ball in to the top corner to seal the points.

Torquay 4 Histon 1

Torquay made light work of promotion rivals Histon thanks to a first-half double from striker Roscoe D’Sane.

The former Aldershot frontman was on target after just six minutes as a Wayne Carlisle corner wasn’t dealt with and D’Sane was hand to smash the ball home from close range.

It was 2-0 in the 22nd minute as Tim Sills released D’Sane and the 28-year-old drove in to the box before finding the bottom corner with a low drive from the edge of the area.

The visitors rallied after the break and Daniel Wright converted a Gareth Gwillim cross in the 49th minute but any chance of a Histon comeback was ended on the hour as Nicky Wroe fired home from the edge of the area.

Sills put the icing on the cake in the 84th minute firing home from close range after neat work from Steve Woods.

Rushden & Diamonds 2 Northwich 1

Rushden heaped more misery on sorry Northwich after two quick-fire strikes from Sam Smith and Lee Tomlin ensured Matt Crowell’s opener counted for nothing.

Crowell fired basement boys Northwich in to a surprise lead in the 15th minute as he converted from close range after the home defence failed to deal with a cross.

The lead lasted until the 67th minute when Smith found the back of the net from close range as the Northwich defence was finally breached.

And three minutes later parity was restored as Smith turned provider and crossed for Tomlin to head home from close range.
