Blue Square Premier round-up

by Setanta.com staff , 28 December 2008

Histon moved back into second place in the table with a 4-1 win at Grays, as Torquay were beaten at home by Kidderminster.

Oxford United 5 Ebbsfleet 1

Chris Wilder celebrated his first win as Oxford United boss in style as The U’s romped past Ebbsfleet.

Lewis Haldane opened the scoring after 16 minutes when he fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box before James Constable made it two just four minutes later.

And Yemi Odubade ensured Wilder enjoyed a winning start at The Kassam Stadium with a 51st minute strike to avenge a 2-1 Boxing Day defeat to Salisbury.

Stacy Long grabbed a late consolation for Ebbsfleet but Phil Trainer notched a fourth and Alex Fisher bagged a fifth for The U’s with four minutes remaining.

Grays Athletic 1 Histon 4

Histon fought back from a goal down to maintain their promotion hopes and heap more woe on struggling Grays Athletic.

The Blues were given a relegation lifeline in their 37th minute when Ishmael Welsh fired home against the FA Cup heroes in the 37th minute.

But postman Mathew Langston – The Stutes’ matchwinner in the FA Cup second round against Leeds – drew Steve Fallon’s men level.

And Jack Midson completed the comeback just two minutes later when he turned home Antonio Murray’s centre before Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Danny Wright sealed the victory.

York 1 Altrincham 2

Altrincham came from a goal down to beat York as Dale Johnson’s 89th minute strike gave them the three points.

Richard Brodie’s 11th goal of the season gave Martin Foyle’s men the lead just after the half hour mark.

But Chris Senior’s first goal in eight games drew the visitors level as the diminutive striker headed home veteran Colin Little’s cross.

And Johnson ensured there was plenty of festive cheer for Graham Heathcote’s men with a last minute winner.

Cambridge United 1 Stevenage 1

Mitchell Cole kept his cool to slot home an equaliser from the spot and steal a point against ten-man Cambridge United.

On loan Peterborough striker Scott Rendell – in his second spell with the club – opened the scoring in the third minutes with his seventh goal in nine games.

But after a tepid second half, the match ended in controversy and Stevenage snatched a goal.

Paul Carden was penalised for a foul on David Bridges and referee Michael Bull pointed to the spot – much to the frustration of Dan Gleeson who was red carded for using abusive language and Cole fired home.

Forest Green 2 Barrow 1

Forest Green moved out of the Blue Square Premier relegation zone after a crucial win over fellow strugglers Barrow.

Adriano Rigoglioso bagged his fourth goal of the season for the relegation-threatened side turning home Alex Lawless’ cross.

And it got worse for the FA Cup heroes as Andrew Mangan rifled home in the 34th minute for his tenth of the campaign.

But Barrow hit back on the stroke of half time when David Brown gave them a lifeline when he slammed home Jason Walker’s cross but it proved to be no more than just a consolation.

Wrexham 1 Woking 1

Wrexham had to settle for a share of the spoils despite dominating proceedings against Woking.

Marc Williams had given The Dragons the perfect start when he headed home Wes Barnes’s corner in the 24th minute.

But poor defending allowed Woking to grab the equaliser on 72 minutes through substitute Tom Denton.

Wrexham had their chances to take all three points but couldn’t penetrate the resilient Cards defence.

Torquay 0 Kidderminster 1

Adam Bartlett was the Kidderminster hero as his last minute penalty save ensured the visitors took away all three points.

Martin Riley broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when he blasted home Martin Brittain’s corner.

But Riley went from hero to zero as he handled in the area in the second minute of injury time and gave away a penalty.

But Bartlett was on hand to palm away Tim Sills’ penalty and seal the victory.

Crawley 1 Eastbourne 0

Crawley moved into the relegation zone despite a less than convincing victory over Eastbourne Borough.

The Red Devils – who could be deducted Blue Square Premier league points for a fourth consecutive year for fielding an ineligible player – put their off the field troubles behind them as Jon-Paul Pittman gave them the lead.

But Jamie Cook missed two efforts to extend Town’s lead while Ashley Barnes should have done better for Boro.
