League Two: Brentford extend lead

by setanta.com staff , 10 March 2009

Leaders Brentford stretched their lead at the top of League Two to seven points thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Barnet on Tuesday night.

Brentford 1 v 0 Barnet

Marcus Bean’s early goal put Brentford seven points clear at the top of League Two after Wycombe lost at Lincoln City.

Bean notched in the eight minute to make it eight games unbeaten for Andy Scott’s men while plunging their fellow Bees back into relegation trouble.

Barnet poured forward after the break to try to draw level and twice went close through leading marksman John O’Flynn.

Ismail Yakubu also wasted a golden opportunity to draw things level after Matthew Lockwood’s corner broke free in the box but Bean’s ninth of the season proved to be decisive

Lincoln 1 v 0 Wycombe

Anthony Elding’s second-half strike put another yet another spanner in Wycombe’s stuttering title bid.

Elding got the decisive goal, his third of the season, four minutes into the second-half after good work from Aaron Brown.

The Imps, smarting from Saturday’s 5-1 drubbing at the hands of struggling Grimsby, had earlier roared out of the blocks with Saturday’s lone scorer Dany N’Guessan threatening.

And despite Will Antwi wasting a golden opportunity to level things in the last second Lincoln held on for a deserved win.

Morecambe 0 v 0 Bury

Bury dropped out of the automatic promotion spots after a rearguard Morecambe action meant The Shakers had to settle for a point.

Andy Bishop looked lively early on for Bury and might have put them ahead but his goalbound shot was blocked.

Elliott Bennett’s also went close to breaking the deadlock after the restart before the impressive Bishop again carved an opening for himself but Barry Roche saved with his legs.

Bishop again went close late on but the former York City frontman fired wide to sum up a frustrating night for Alan Knill’s men.

Rochdale 3 v 0 Bradford

Adam Le Fondre’s second-half penalty double lifted Rochdale into the automatic promotion spots.

Le Fondre pulled the strings all night and he and Rory McArdle both went close before the break before Rory McArdle’s fourth of the season broke the deadlock early in the second-half.

But it was the Le Fondre show thereafter, the 22-year-old showing a cool head to twice convert from the spot and take his tally for the season to 18.

Exeter 1 v 3 Bournemouth

A Bournemouth second-half goal blitz lifted The Cherries out of the relegation zone.

Brett Pitman struck twice in the last half hour as the visitors made it ten points from a possible fifteen.

Earlier, Adam Stansfield had fired The Grecians into a half-time lead with his ninth of the season.

But Danny Hollands drew things level for Eddie Howe’s men before Pitman’s double, his last coming three minutes from time, sealed the win.

Gillingham 1 v 0 Darlington

Simeon Jackson enhanced his growing reputation with a 90th minute penalty that takes Gillingham to fifth.

Jackson made no mistake from the spot after Alan White’s handball, taking his tally for the season to 16.

Mark McCammon had gone closest to breaking the deadlock for The Gills in the first half but he somehow headed straight into the arms of Andy Oakes.

Adam Miller and John Nutter both went close after the break as Gillingham continued to press their cash-strapped visitors and deservedly got the win when Jackson struck with almost the last kick of the game.

Aldershot 0 v 0 Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury remain one point outside the play-offs after they somehow escaped with a draw at The Rec.

The Shots wasted two good chances to take the lead in the first half, first John Grant failed to find the target after 24 minutes.

And eight minutes later it was Jake Robinson’s turn to be the villain, the 22-year-old frontman firing over the barn when well placed.

And it was a familiar tale after the break but South London side couldn’t find a way past Shrews keeper Luke Daniels.

Notts County 0 v 2 Luton

Luton kept their dreams of an unlikely survival alive with first half goals from Tom Craddock and Chris Martin.

Notts County had looked the most likely early on but Martin broke the deadlock for The Hatters in the 25th minute, converting from inside the box after good work from Tom Craddock.

And the duo combined again to make it two, this time Martin was brought down in the box by Adam Tann and Craddock made it a memorable night by slamming home the spot kick on the stroke of half-time.

The Magpies dominated possession in the second-half but failed to create any cast-iron openings.

Macclesfield 0 v 2 Accrington

Accrington did their survival hopes a power of good with a well deserved win at neighbours Macclesfield.

Stanley dominated the first-half and got the goal they deserved when Robert Wiliams fired home from close range on the stroke of half-time.

Barely a minute later the home side could have been level but Matthew Flynn fired wide when well placed.

Andrew Procter’s second of the season sealed the points for Stanley with just a minute left on the clock.

Port Vale 0 v 1 Dagenham & Redbridge

Jamie Guy’s solitary strike heaped more misery on under-fire Port Vale boss Dean Glover.

The home fans have voiced their discontent with demonstrations against the management and board in recent weeks and things didn’t get any better when Colchester loanee Guy struck 25 minutes in.

Dagenham looked glad to be on the road after two consecutive home defeats and dominated much of the first half.

Vale poured forward in the second-half in search of a point but Guy, who joined from Colchester last week, proved to be the difference between the sides.

Chester 1 v 5 Rotherham

Reuben Reid’s hat-trick piled further misery on Mark Wright’s freefalling Chester side who are now without a win in 15 games.

Mark Robins’ men roared back in response to Kevin Ellison putting Chester ahead with Reid putting them level from the spot after Kevin Roberts handled in the box.

Two goals in the last seven minutes of the first-half settle the game, first Michael Cummins headed home and Drewe Broughton’s strike made it three.

Reid added two more in the second-half to seal the win and leave Chester just a point outside the dreaded drop zone.
