League Two weekend preview

by Setanta.com staff , 20 March 2009

Gillingham look to close the gap on League Two leaders Brentford and Wycombe hope to bounce back.

Wycombe v Rochdale

Wycombe boss Peter Taylor will welcome new signing Lee Sawyer straight into the Chairboys fold with Tommy Doherty starting a four-match ban.

Sawyer, 19, arrived on a month’s loan from Chelsea and could be handed an immediate debut as Taylor’s men look to bounce back after dropping out of the top two for the first time this year in midweek.

Taylor’s opposite number Keith Hill has also been busy in the transfer market and may too hand a debut to Carlisle loanee Gary Madine.

With Lee McEvilly joining Barrow this week, Hill moved quickly to secure the services of striker Madine while Chris Dagnall returns from a ban, Ciaran Toner and Will Buckley are also available again after injury.

Accrington Stanley v Exeter

Accrington midfielder Andrew Proctor will miss the visit of Exeter after becoming the latest on the ever growing injury list.

Proctor joins Sean McConville (ankle), Peter Murphy (knee), Leam Richardson (pelvis) and Chris King (thigh) on the sidelines as Stanley look to make it four games unbeaten.

For play-off hopefuls Exeter - Charlton loanee Stuart Fleetwood may be handed an immediate debut after signing this week to replace Steve Basham who is struggling with an ankle injury.

Boss Tisdale will also be without skipper Matt Taylor who broke his foot in the midweek win over Bradford with on-loan centre back Troy Archibald-Henville ready to deputise.

Barnet v Lincoln City

Bees boss Ian Hendon is set to shuffle his pack with midfielder Michael Leary and veteran duo Gary Breen and Paul Furlong returning to fitness.

The trio missed last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Morecambe through injury but all proved their fitness in time for the visit of Lincoln.

Imps manager Peter Jackson may also turn to a wise old head with Geoff Horsfield poised to replace the suspended Anthony Elding.

Danny Hone and Lenell John-Lewis are certain to miss the trip but Paris Simmons is fit to return from an ankle injury.

Grimsby v Gillingham

Grimsby boss Mike Newell has a much-depleted squad at his disposal for the visit of high flying Gillingham.

Midfielders Danny Boshell and JP Kalala are again doubts after missing the midweek defeat at Luton, while Tom Newey, Phil Barnes and Gary Montgomery won’t be able to answer Newell’s call after being released this week.

Winger Dennis Oli is pushing for a start for The Gills and may be called up to replace Mark McCammon who has been hit by the mysterious stomach bug sweeping the club.

McCammon was replaced by Oli after 60 minutes of the midweek win over Notts County and may not be fit in time to take on the struggling Mariners.

Bournemouth v Notts County

Veteran frontman Steve Fletcher will be fit to face County despite needing six stitches in a facial wound in midweek.

Fletcher notched twice in Tuesday’s 4-1 destruction of Bradford but may not be joined in the starting XI by skipper Shaun Cooper who faces a late fitness test.

Midfielder Adam Nowland is set to return to The Magpies line-up this week after missing the midweek defeat against Gillingham.

And the midfielder’s return would leave keeper Russell Hoult as boss Ian McParland’s only injury concern.

Bradford v Port Vale

Barry Conlon and Michael Boulding look set to continue upfront for out of form Bradford with top scorer Peter Thorne still out with a neck injury.

Boss Stuart McCall, who vowed to quit if his side fail to make the play-offs, may wield the axe with Lee Bullock, Joe Colbeck and Paul McLaren all in line for a start.

Port Vale defender John McCombe faces a battle to prove his fitness for The Bantams clash due to a hip injury.

And under-fire Vale boss Dean Glover may also have to do without defender Lee Collins, midfielder Scott Brown and striker Marc Richards who are all struggling.

Bury v Chester

Bury’s 16-goal frontman Andy Bishop is locked in a race against time to prove his fitness for the visit of freefalling Chester.

Bishop hasn’t trained all week and is a serious doubt while midfielders Michael Jones (ankle) and Elliott Bennett (hamstring) are struggling but should be fit enough to feature.

Chester will be without Damien Mozika who has a hamstring injury while Shaun Kelly is still out with a knee problem.

With Chester’s hands tied in the transfer market, Mark Wright will have to solve his injury problems from within as his side bid for their first win since Boxing Day.

Darlington v Aldershot

Darlington boss Dave Penney has been handed a boost with the return of midfielder Franz Burgmeier in time for the visit of Aldershot.

But Neil Austin and Robin Hulbert will be out for another two weeks and frontman Pawel Abbott is three weeks from recovering from a back injury.

Shots midfielder Scott Donnelly may return but keeper Nikki Bull and skipper Rhys Day are both out with ankle trouble.

Dave Winfield and midfielder Lewis Chalmers are also doubts after picking up knocks.

Luton v Macclesfield

Luton striker Asa Hall is set to return to the starting line-up after notching The Hatters’ last gasp winner over Grimsby.

But defender Ed Asafu-Adjaye, who missed The Mariners clash, is again a doubt as Mick Harford’s men continue their Houdini escape attempt at the foot of the table.

Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander, who received the all-clear after undergoing a brain scan last week, will be without defender James Jennings who has a knee problem.

Frontman Francis Green and defender Sean Hessey are also out as The Silkmen look to end a dismal run which has seen them take just six points from the last 21 available.

Rotherham v Chesterfield

Rotherham boss Mark Robins has a striking headache with Drewe Broughton and Jamie Clarke battling it out for the No. 9 jersey.

Broughton has recovered from the head injury which kept him out in the middle of the week, while Clarke scored after coming off the bench on Tuesday.

Chestefield frontman Martin Gritton should shake off a knock picked up in the midweek win at table-toppers Brentford.

And Gritton could be joined on the team bus by midfielder Jamie Winter who is fit to return after missing the last five games with a head injury.

Shrewsbury v Morecambe

Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has no fresh injury concerns for the visit of Morecambe as his seventh-placed side look to maintain their play-off push.

Dave Hibbert (foot) and keeper Jaz Singh (cheekbone) remain sidelined as The Shrews look to make it five matches unbeaten.

Simpson’s opposite number Sammy McIlroy will also resist the urge to juggle his troops and field the same XI that saw off Barnet 2-1 last weekend.

This means frontman Rene Howe, who has 11 goals to his name, will have to continue his rehabilitation from the bench.
