League Two: Wycombe held at home

by Setanta.com staff , 28 March 2009

Shrewsbury dealt a fresh blow to Wycombe’s ailing title challenge when coming from behind to claim a 1-1 draw.

Wycombe’s form has dipped markedly in recent weeks and although they led at the interval, The Shrews came back to take a deserved point.

Shrewsbury dominated the early exchanges but Gary Holt dealt a sucker punch when firing Wycombe ahead with a superb curling effort from 20 yards.

The visitors continued to knock the ball around with confidence and were rewarded 15 minutes from time as Ben Davies (pictured) stole in unmarked to head home Steven Leslie’s excellent cross.

Wycombe have a game in hand on Bury, Rochdale and Gillingham, while the point keeps Shrewsbury firmly in the play-off mix.

Leaders Brentford were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with fellow promotion rivals Gillingham, while Rochdale and Exeter drew 2-2.

Brentford 1 Gillingham 1

Brentford and Gillingham shared the points as David Hunt and Simeon Jackson got the goals in the battle at the top of the table.

League leaders Brentford were ahead at the break when Hunt fired in a spectacular free kick from outside the area after Ryan Dickson was fouled by Nicky Southall.

Mark McCammon went close to pulling things level with a header while Jackson had a goal dubiously disallowed.

Their dominance in attack eventually paid off when Andy Barcham was felled by Karleigh Osborne in the box and Jackson stepped up to convert and ensure it was honours even.

Rochdale 2 Exeter 2

Marcus Stewart grabbed a double for Exeter as Rochdale ended a run of three straight defeats in their draw at Spotland.

The home team broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when a Mark Jones corner saw Lee Thorpe bundle the ball in from close range for his fifth strike of the campaign.

After chances before the break, it was Exeter who pulled level ten minutes into the second half when former Ipswich man Stewart bundled the ball home at the second attempt.

The game then swung full circle as Rochdale retook the lead when sub Adam Le Fondre fired his 18th of the season before Stewart added a second from the penalty spot barely 60 seconds later.

Bury 1 Bournemouth 0

Andy Morrell got the only goal of the game as Bury moved into the automatic promotion places with a battling victory over Bournemouth.

It took until ten minutes into the second half for the goal to come as Morrell put the ball into the unguarded net after good build up play down the right-hand side.

The goal sparked up a game that saw the first half finish goalless as Mike Jones and Elliott Bennett both went close for the home side while The Cherries’ Danny Hollands saw an effort stopped by Wayne Brown.

The visitors’ Jeff Goulding saw a shot stopped late on as they pushed for a point, but it was the home team who extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Grimsby 1 Aldershot 0

Barry Conlon’s grabbed a vital 82nd minute penalty for Grimsby as they overcame Aldershot and in so doing moved three points clear of Chester in the relegation dogfight.

There were opportunities for both teams in the first 45 minutes at Blundell Park as Nick Hegarty had a chance for Grimsby while The Shots’ Justin Cochrane also went close.

The game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until Conlon’s penalty, which was awarded after Anthony Charles handled.

Conlon, who scored on his debut last week against Gillingham, calmly slotted the ball down the middle to gain a vital three points for The Mariners.

Chester 0 Bradford 0

Bradford’s play-off push took another dent as they had to settle for a point against lowly Chester.

An even first period at The Deva Stadium saw the home side create the better chances, with Ryan Lowe and Kevin Ellison both going close.

And after the interval it was Bradford who came closest to breaking the deadlock, the best chances falling to Nicky Law and Paul Mullin but in the end a stalemate was the end result.

Morecambe 1 Luton 2

Luton powered to a third straight victory as Kevin Gallen’s goal saw them come from behind to overcome Morecambe and keep their slim hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

It was The Shrimps who took the lead midway through the half when Stewart Drummond headed in Michael Twiss’ free-kick for his seventh of the season.

The Hatters had an earlier Chris Martin goal disallowed but the young striker made up for it two minutes before the break when he headed in Keith Keane’s long throw.

And 15 minutes into the second half, the away team got the decisive goal as a free kick deflected its way to Gallen who struck his third goal of the season, and more importantly grabbed a vital three points for Luton.

Barnet 0 Darlington 1

Pawel Abbott scored the only goal at The Underhill as Darlington made it three wins in four games.

Barnet had a couple of good chances to open the scoring in a goalless first half as Paul Furlong hit the bar with a header on the half-hour mark.

The stalemate was finally ended on 66 minutes when Abbott tapped in from close range after Danny Carlton’s cross fell to him in the six yard box.

And while there were chances for Joe Devera and Adam Birchall to pull it level, Darlington took all three points back north.

Chesterfield 2 Port Vale 1

A Jack Lester double against Port Vale saw Chesterfield record a third win in four and increase their chances of making a late charge for a play-off spot.

With the clock running down, it was Lester’s quick double that put Chesterfield in the driving seat when he capitalised on a defensive error to roll the ball into the net on 68 minutes.

Just six minutes later he tapped in after striker strike partner Drew Talbot’s effort was kept out.

Vale did manage to pull a goal back with 13 minutes left when Paul Marshall got on the end of an inswinging free kick from the left hand side but it wasn’t enough.

Dagenham & Redbridge 2 Macclesfield 1

Matt Ritchie fired a winner seven minutes from time as Dagenham & Redbridge came from behind to beat Macclesfield, who fell to a fourth straight defeat.

Dagenham were in charge for the opening period but a defensive error gifted John Rooney a chance to fire in a memorable first senior goal from 20 yards.

The Daggers were looking for a way back into the game midway through the second half, and a double substitution provided it, as leading scorer Paul Benson came on and fired the equaliser.

And with seven minutes remaining, Ritchie was on target with a shot that flew past Jon Brain to make it three matches unbeaten for The Victoria Road side.

Lincoln City 1 Notts County 1

Two goals in two minutes saw Lincoln and Notts County take a point each at Sincil Bank as Delroy Facey and Sam Mullarkey got the goals.

County were in command in the first 45 but they couldn’t make the breakthrough as Jamie Forrester, Matthew Hamshaw and Phil Picken all went close to getting the first goal.

And for the first 20 minutes of the second neither side could get the opening, but when County broke the deadlock, City soon pulled one back.

County’s Facey rounded the keeper and fired in from an acute angle before substitute Sam Mullarkey equalised for the home side.

Rotherham 0 Accrington Stanley 0

Mid-table Rotherham and Accrington shared the spoils as neither team could make a telling contribution at The Don Valley stadium.

The first half saw chances for both sides. Millers defender Jamie Green saw a free kick punched away by Kenny Arthur after 11 minutes while Craig Lindfield fired over for Stanley and James Ryan had a shot blocked by the defence.

And the second half followed much the same pattern, with Michael Symes having two good opportunities for Stanley while Ryan Taylor, Mark Burchill and Mark Hudson all went close to snatching the win for Rotherham.
