Jones brace helps Bluebirds soar

by Toby Davis , 29 March 2009

Barrow moved four points clear of the Blue Square Premier relegation zone with a 3-0 win at fellow strugglers Weymouth.

Paul Jones bagged a brace after Mark Boyd had given Barrow the lead early in the second half to wrap up a comfortable three points for the visitors.

But the shine was taken off their victory midway through the second half when Lee McEvily was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes.

Weymouth looked like they had taken the lead after only two minutes when Gavin Hoyte headed a Sam Cutler free kick into the back of the net, but his celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

But Barrow started to get the upper hand and could have gone 1-0 up after 16 minutes when Lee Steele was picked out with a diagonal ball to the far post, but could not keep his header on target.

Both teams were struggling to keep possession on a bobbly pitch that made passing difficult and chances were few and far between.

Barrow eventually took the lead six minutes into the second half in spectacular fashion when Boyd hit a vicious half-volley from the edge of the area past Terras keeper Adam Legzdins.

And the visitors doubled their advantage two minutes later when Jones grabbed the first of his two goals, poking the ball home with the outside of his foot from close range.

Barrow were reduced to ten men on 68 minutes when McEvily saw red after a late challenge on Hoyte brought his second yellow card.

But Jones ensured there was no way back for Weymouth, grabbing his second, and the visitors’ third with nine minutes remaining.

The centre back rose to meet a corner from the right and powered his header past Legzdins from 10 yards.
