Cambridge tightened their grip on second spot in the Blue Square Premier table with a 1-0 win at Woking on Monday evening, live on Setanta Sports.
Jai Reason’s 82nd-minute strike secured victory for United, while Woking’s relegation concerns deepened with defeat at home.
Both sides had chances to open the scoring in the first half and it was Woking who went closest inside the opening 45 minutes, as Matt Pattison volleyed marginally wide and then forced United keeper Danny Potter into a save from 20 yards.
Woking keeper Danny Knowles was then called into action as he parried Courtney Pitt’s close-range shot as the teams went in goalless at half time.
Further chances ensued but it took until eight minutes from time for the breakthrough to finally come.
Reason – on loan from Ipswich – collected a pass from Robbie Willmot and picked his spot from the edge of the penalty area, placing a shot past Knowles as United took all three points.
