League Two weekend preview

by Setanta.com staff , 03 April 2009

Leaders Brentford visit out of form Bradford and Rochdale hope to strengthen their second place.

Bradford v Brentford

Bantams' boss Stuart McCall has promised to shake things up ahead of their must-win clash against league Two leaders Brentford as they search for a first victory in six.

A defeat would leave Bradford's play-off hopes hanging by a thread and McCall is set to bring back Chris Brandon, Keith Gillespie and Joe Colbeck while striker Peter Thorne is fit again.

The Bees were rocked last week when leading goalscorer Charlie MacDonald was ruled out for the rest of the season after dislocating his shoulder against Gillingham.

Damian Spencer or loanee Billy Clarke, who will be released by Ipswich at the end of the season, are set to step in while Andy Scott is also without Jordan Rhodes and Nathan Elder are also out.

Bournemouth v Rochdale

Cherries manager Eddie Howe has some striking dilemmas for the visit of Rochdale in a match that could have huge repercussions at both ends of the table.

Forward Steve Fletcher’s knee problem was again aggravated in the defeat to Bury and Howe will have to decide between Fletcher, Lee Bradbury and Warren Feeney.

Bournemouth sit just four points above the drop zone while Rochdale are only in the automatic promotion places courtesy of goal difference.

Dale, who are looking to break their 40-year promotion hoodoo, will be without centre back Nathan Stanton for three games after he picked up his tenth booking of the campaign.

Port Vale v Bury

Port Vale hit-man Marc Richards looks set to miss out for the match against Bury as an Achilles problem continues to trouble the 26-year-old.

Louis Dodds will continue to deputise while Danny Glover, son of under- pressure boss Dean, may be given the nod ahead of David Howland.

For Bury 16-goal leading goalscorer Andy Bishop is in line to return to first-team action after missing The Shakers’ win over Bournemouth with a knee problem.

Manager Alan Knill has a near fully-fit squad to choose from with defender Paul Scott the only absentee.

Gillingham v Barnet

Gills boss Mark Stimson is set to keep faith with the same XI that rescued a point at league leaders Brentford for their must-win clash with strugglers Barnet.

The Kent side have only lost once in their last ten matches and on-loan midfielder Josh Wright could make his home debut following three games on the road.

Barnet are also likely to keep change to a minimum with Mark Hughes still working his way back to full match fitness following an ankle injury.

Long-term injury victims Abu Ogogo and Jeremey De Magalhaes are still sidelined for The Bees.

Exeter v Dagenham & Redbridge

Dagenham’s leading scorer Paul Benson looks set to return to the starting line- up against Exeter after making a goalscoring impact off the bench last week.

Benson grabbed his 17th goal of the season when he struck the equaliser in The Daggers’ 2-1 win over Macclesfield with loan signing Jamie Guy set to make way.

Dan Seabourne starts a one-match ban for Exeter who will have key defender Matt Taylor back in action next week after he returned to training.

However the game has come too soon for striker Steve Basham and midfielder Alex Russell.

Aldershot v Rotherham

Aldershot are down to the bare bones as they attempt to claim a hat-trick of wins over Rotherham this season.

Gary Waddock is still missing star midfielder Ben Harding, skipper Rhys Day, keeper Nikki Bull and Dave Winfield while stand-in captain Anthony Charles is available before starting a suspension.

Rotherham head into the game on the back of a five-game unbeaten run on the road and Mark Robins is likely to keep changes to a minimum.

Left back Jamie Green is available after recovering from a dead leg that ruled him out of the midweek win over Luton.

Shrewsbury v Grimsby

Shrewsbury defenders Michael Jackson and Kevin McIntyre have returned to training but they won’t be ready for the clash with Grimsby.

Winger Steven Leslie could replace Terry Dunfield in the starting line-up after an impressive performance from the bench at Wycombe last weekend.

Grimsby boss Mike Newell is set to name an unchanged team for the third successive match as The Mariners continue their survival.

Barry Conlon and Chris Llewellyn have recovered from thigh and knee problems and are fit for the trip to The New Meadow.

Notts County v Chester

Notts County winger Matt Hamshaw has recovered from a dead leg and will be in The Magpies side to face Chester.

Jamie Clapham, Michael Johnson and Adam Tann are also expected to be fit but Russell Hoult and Stephen Hunt are both out with ankle and knee injuries.

City have doubts over Kevin Ellison and French midfielder Damien Mozika, who are both battling with sore hamstrings.

Defender Shaun Kelly’s knee problem is still troubling him but with Chester in desperate need of a win, he will be risked at Meadow Lane.

Macclesfield v Chesterfield

James Jennings, Francis Green and Izak Reid are still absent for Macclesfield as they bid to arrest an alarming run of five successive defeats.

They both have knee injuries but boss Keith Alexander should have defenders Rikki Bains (knee) and Sean Hessey (groin) available again.

Former Silkmen striker Martin Gritton could miss out on a return to Moss Rose as he’s struggling with a back injury.

Midfielder Peter Till is a doubt after he limped out of the draw with Aldershot with a hamstring problem.

Darlington v Morecambe

Keeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak will line up between the sticks for crisis club Darlington against Morecambe.

First choice Andy Oakes is out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury picked up in the 1-0 win over Barnet while boss Dave Penney admits he is completely in the dark over the club’s future after The Quakers went into administration.

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy admits he has already started planning for next season having secured safety and should have skipper Jim Bentley available after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Midfielder Neil Wainwright, who made 254 appearances for Darlington, is also pushing for a recall against his former club after missing last week’s defeat to Luton.

Accrington Stanley v Lincoln

Accrington could secure mathematical safety from relegation this weekend with a win over Lincoln but will have do it without a host of players.

Peter Cavanagh, Peter Murphy, Chris King, Leam Richardson, and Ian Dunbavin are all out but Stanley are unbeaten in six.

Lincoln boss Peter Jackson will also have to shuffle his pack with midfielder Shane Clarke likely to be replaced by Michael O’Connor.

Paul Green has recovered from a groin injury and may also be in the frame for a recall.
