League Two round-up

by Gerard Meagher , 04 April 2009

Second-placed Exeter moved just four points behind League Two leaders Brentford on Saturday.

Bradford 1 Brentford 1

Peter Thorne’s last-gasp strike rescued a point for Bradford as league-leaders Brentford continue to feel the heat at the top of the table.

A cagey first half saw Thorne miss a good chance for Bradford. His snap-shot was well saved by Brentford stopper Ben Hamer.

But just after the hour mark, Billy Clarke stooped to nod home Ryan Dickson’s whipped cross for his first goal of the season to give The Bees the lead.

But 35-year-old Thorne smashed in from close range, deep into injury time for his 15th goal of the season, ensuring Brentford are now four games without a win.

Gilingham 0 Barnet 2

Barnet veteran Paul Furlong rolled back the years to inspire his side to a fine away victory as Gillingham stuttered in their quest for promotion.

The former Chelsea hitman broke the deadlock on 23 minutes, powering a header past Simon Royce in the Gills’ net, after a fine cross from John O’Flynn.

And Furlong was in action for his side’s second as he was unfairly challenged in the box by Mark Bentley, allowing O’Flynn to smash home his 18th goal of the season.

Simon King rallied Gillingham with a fine curling effort that whistled past the post but Barnet strolled to just their fourth win on the road this season.

Aldershot 0 Rotherham 1

Rotherham forward Reuben Reid continued his red-hot streak against Aldershot, notching his ninth goal in eight games to hand his side the points.

The ex-Plymouth forward curled a delightful chip over the out-stretched Shots’ keeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz from all of 30 yards on 11 minutes.

Aldershot flew out of the blocks in the second half and but for a fine save from Millers’ stopper Andy Warrington to deny Andy Sandell, the hosts would have been level.

And the visitors had Warrington to thank again in injury as he made a superb double-save to keep out Jake Robinson’s header before somehow beating away Anthony Charles’ follow-up.

Notts County 1 Chester 2

A five-star performance from Ryan Lowe earned Chester their first win since Boxing Day to lift them to within a point of safety.

Lowe gave Chester the perfect possible start when he swung in a perfect corner which former Liverpool midfielder David Mannix gleefully headed home.

The Blues kept up their dominance after the break and Lowe stretched the lead himself, converting from inside the six-yard box after good work from Paul Rutherford.

Mike Edwards grabbed Notts County a consolation in the 88th minute but it was too little too late for Ian McParland’s men.

Accrington Stanley 0 Lincoln City 2

Scott Kerr’s first goals of the season were enough to hand Lincoln a well-earned victory against in-form Accrington Stanley.

Kerr put the visitors ahead after just four minutes, slotting home his first goal of the season after fine work from Anthony Elding.

And Kerr had his and The Imps’ second just after the break, when he rifled the ball low past Stanley keeper Kenny Arthur.

Michael Symes should have grabbed a goal back for Stanley late on but he fired wide as the hosts crashed to their first defeat in seven matches.

Bournemouth 4 Rochdale 0

Brett Pitman’s stunning hat-trick inspired Bournemouth to a thumping victory and dealt Rochdale’s promotion hopes a major blow.

Pitman’s 12th goal of the season gave the hosts the lead on 11 minutes, as the Jersey-born forward measured a superb strike into the top-left corner from the edge of the area.

Liam Feeney doubled The Cherries’ advantage on 25 minutes, powering home his first ever goal in the Football League from 12 yards.

And Pitman fired home his second on 67 minutes from 20 yards, before tapping in at the death to complete a resounding victory for Bournemouth.

Exeter 2 Dagenham & Redbridge 1

A goal in either half from Charlton loanee Stuart Fleetwood lifted Exeter to second in the league table.

The home side couldn’t have asked for a better start when Fleetwood lashed home his first from the edge of the box in the 16th minute.

Ben Strevens brought the Daggers level in the 36th minute when he latched onto Matt Ritchie’s pass for his 14th of the season.

But Fleetwood ensured The Grecians took all three points just four minutes after half-time, again firing home from the edge of the box to clinch Exeter’s 12th home win of the season.

Macclesfield 1 Chesterfield 1

Martin Gritton returned to haunt his old employees Macclesfield but his first-half strike was not enough to halt Chesterfield’s play-off stutter.

The Spirietes flew out of the blocks and took a surprise lead after eight minutes when former Silkman Gritton, who joined the Spireites in January, fired home from 18 yards.

However Chesterfield’s lead was short-lived and Gareth Evans pulled the home side level powering home Ahmed Deen’s pin-point cross seven minutes later.

Second-half substitute Darren Currie ran the Chesterfield show as they looked to get a winner late on but they had to settle for their second draw in five days.

Port Vale 1 Bury 1

Elliott Bennett rescued a point for Bury with a second-half header on a bad afternoon for the League Two’s automatic promotion hopefuls.

While Rochdale went down to a 4-0 spanking at Bournemouth Bury needed Bennett’s header to rescue a point.

In a dour first half the only chance of note fell to Andy Morrell but he somehow fired wide after combining well with strike partner Phil Jevons.

The game sprung into life after the break when James Lawrie capitalised on a Wayne Brown blunder to fire home from 35 yards but Bennett made sure the visitors left with a share of the spoils.

Shrewsbury 1 Grimsby 1

Barry Conlon’s second goal in a week extended Grimsby’s unbeaten run to three at the New Meadow.

Conlon, hero of last week’s 1-0 win at Aldershot, headed The Mariners ahead in the 56th minute after good work from James Hunt.

But the visitors’ joy was short-lived when Ben Davies smashed home from close range just two minutes later.

Steven Leslie went close as the home side pressed for a late winner but The Shrews found Grimsby keeper Wayne Henderson in fine form.

Darlington 0 Morecambe 0

Darlington forward Pawel Abbott missed a glorious opportunity deep into injury time to snatch victory as this match ended in stalemate.

Abbott, who was the hero last week for The Quakers as he netted the winner against Barnet, found plenty of room but fired into the side-netting with just seconds left on the clock.

It what was otherwise a dull match, Garry Hunter wasted an excellent chance in the first half for Morecambe, but he blazed over.
