Blue Square weekend round-up

by setanta.com staff , 11 April 2009

Table-topping Burton got back to winning ways with a comfortable 3-1 win over fellow promotion-chasers Histon.

The Brewers have been wobbling at the top of the Blue Square Premier in recent weeks and have picked up just one win in their last four games.

Defender Aaron Webster opened the scoring for Roy McFarland’s men after just 13 minutes, when he turned home Keith Gilroy’s corner before Andy Corbett wrapped up the points shortly before the hour mark.

Ryan Austin netted a third in the dying minutes for Burton before Neil Andrews netted a late consolation for The Stutes.

Torquay United 0 Crawley 2

Substitute Robbie Matthews netted in the 92nd minute to all but end Torquay’s chances of catching runaway leaders Burton at Plainmoor.

Dannie Bulman broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when he turned home Jamie Cook’s centre.

Torquay threw everything at the Crawley defence after the break and Roscoe D’Sane forced a superb save from Simon Rayner.

But Matthews made sure of the points in the dying minutes when Cook crossed for the striker to tap home from six yards.

Cambridge United 2 Eastbourne 1

Cambridge fought their way back from a goal down to pick up all three points and strengthen their bid for a play-off berth.

After a goalless first half, Eastbourne took the lead from the spot after Wayne Hatswell had hauled down Allan Tait and Paul Armstrong smashed home the spot kick.

Lee Phillips ensured Eastbourne were not ahead for too long though as he headed home Courtney Pitt’s pin-point corner.

And Chris Holroyd wrapped up the points 20 minutes from time from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Matt Smart.

Altrincham 2 Kidderminster 2

Colin Little netted a 95th minute goal from the penalty spot to snatch a point from the jaws of defeat for Altrincham against promotion-chasing Kidderminster.

Defender Michael Welch gave mid-table Alty the half time lead when he headed home Shaun Densmore’s cross in the 38th minute.

Mark Yates’ men were a different side after the break and Martin Brittain curled home a free kick and Matthew Barnes-Homer headed home to give Harriers the lead.

But Graham Heathcote’s men refused to give up and Little was The Robins hero with the final touch of the game when he converted a spot kick after Michael Carr had fouled Rod Thornley.

York 1 Northwich 2

Jonny Allan’s 91st minute penalty heaped more misery on York as Northwich took all three points from Bootham Cresent.

Martin Foyle’s men – who have reached the FA Trophy final next month – got off to the worst possible start as Jon Allan punted home Joel Byrom’s corner.

Robinson made the most of his chance to rescue an equaliser when he placed his spot kick, after Brodie had been felled by Ryan Brown.

But Allen was in the right place at the right time to hand Andy Preece’s men the points in the first minute of injury time.

Oxford United 1 Wrexham 0

James Constable netted his 22nd goal of the season with the final touch of the match to keep Oxford’s play-off dream alive.

Constable nodded home in the 94th minute past stand-in keeper Ashley Westwood after regular keeper Gunnar Neilsen had gone off injured.

Defender Westwood was under the cosh for the final ten minutes but held firm until Constable latched on to Craig Nelthorpe’s cross.

Wrexham did have the ball in the back of the net midway through the half when Obi Amoruo tucked the ball home but his effort was chalked off.

Forest Green 0 Woking 2

Goals from Alex Rhodes and Liam Marum saw Woking edge out of the relegation zone with victory over Forest Green, whose five match unbeaten run came to an end.

The game’s opener came on 18 minutes as Rhodes, who went off injured shortly after, fired in a spectacular effort from 25-yards to give The Cards an advantage they held until half time.

After the break, Forest Green’s Andrew Mangan and Jonathan Smith both had chances to bring things level but couldn’t beat Danny Knowles.

And Woking then put a gloss on the result when Marum added the second in injury time when he fired in a low shot from 20-yards.

Stevenage 1 Ebbsfleet 0

Stevenage made it three wins in four as Mitchell Cole got the only goal of the game and, in doing so, kept up Borough’s push for a play-off spot.

After early chances for strikers Steve Morison and Calum Willock, it was Cole who gave Borough the lead just after the half hour. He picked up the ball from Willock and rolled past Lance Cronin for his 12th goal of the season.

Stevenage were in charge for much of the match and laid siege to the Ebbsfleet goal in search of a decisive second.

Willock, Cole, and Junior Mendes all had chances to extend the lead, while at the other end Stacy Long had a couple of good opportunities for Ebbsfleet, but they couldn’t break through.

Rushden 1 Kettering 0

Sam Smith proved the super-sub as his solitary strike was the difference between the sides in the Northamptonshire derby at Nene Park.

Smith finally broke the deadlock with eight minutes left when Smith got on the end of a cross to stab the ball home from close range to make it three games unbeaten for Rushden.

Smith’s goal proved to be the difference in a contest which contained few clear chances, but Kettering still could have snatched a point in the closing stages.

Ben Wright and Luke Potter both had opportunities for The Poppies but neither could test Dale Roberts while Nick McNamara had a chance to seal it for Rushden.

Mansfield 2 Barrow 2

A 92nd minute header from Barrow’s Nick Rogan assured a share of the points between Mansfield and Barrow who had goalkeeper Alan Marriott sent off in the melee following the equaliser.

Rogan’s header cancelled out Aaron O’Connor strike 11 minutes from time which had appeared to have given the home team the three points. O’Connor collected a Daryl Clare ball and the substitute shot low into the net for his seventh of the season.

The game livened up following a goalless first half with it taking just two second half minutes to bring about the opener when Mansfield’s Ryan Williams picked up the ball and unleashed a powerful effort from 20-yards which flew into the top corner.

The Stags lead lasted for just five minutes though as Andrew Bond equalised from the spot after Scott Garner had given the away the kick by handling inside the box.

Grays 3 Salisbury 1

Andy Pugh fired a double for Grays as they moved away from the relegations places with a comfortable victory over mid-table Salisbury.

Pugh, on loan from Gillingham, opened the scoring with 12 minutes on the clock when he rose above the defence and powered home a header following Barry Cogan’s corner.

And he then doubled his tally for the afternoon two minutes before the interval as he received the ball from Stuart Thurgood and unleashed a powerful shot past James Bittner into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Grays then grabbed another six minutes into the second half as Jamie Taylor collected Thurgood’s free-kick and forced the ball into the net from close range before Salisbury did manage a consolation with 20 minutes left as Charles Ademeno finished from close range.

Lewes 1 Weymouth 0

Relegated Lewes recorded a second win in a week as Chris Breach got the only goal of the afternoon and inflicted an eleventh straight defeat on Weymouth.

Despite Weymouth's off-field problems, they were dominant on the pitch during the match with Ben Gill having three early chances to give them the lead before they wasted their best chance to take the lead as Stephen Reed missed a penalty.

Despite this, it was Lewes who finally breached the Weymouth defence with 20 minutes remaining when the aptly named Breach headed in from six yards following a cross from Luke Rooney.

The Terras then had more chances to get at least a point, but Rooks keeper Rikki Banks was equal to everything they could throw at him.
