Blue Square Premier round-up

by Gerard Meagher , 18 April 2009

Second-placed Cambridge United claimed a priceless victory away to Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.

Salisbury 1 Cambridge United 2

A Neil Martin own goal handed Cambridge all three points and kept their automatic promotion hopes alive at Salisbury.

Scott Rendell’s close-range effort put The U’s on their way on 19 minutes, tapping home Chris Holroyd’s low cross.

Charlie Griffin restored parity just after the half-hour mark when he nodded Darrell Clarke’s free-kick past Cambridge keeper Danny Potter.

But just before the half-time interval, Martin deflected Andy Parkinson’s fierce shot past the hapless James Bittner to ensure the title race will go down to the last day of the season.

Stevenage 0 Torquay 0

Ten-man Torquay held on for a point at Stevenage as time is running out for the hosts if they are to squeeze into the play-off zone.

Lee Mansell saw red just after the hour mark when he picked up two bookings in the space of a minute, leaving The Gulls up against it.

But Torquay held firm, thanks to some fine goalkeeping from Scott Bevan, who made excellent saves to deny both Mitchell Cole and Steve Morison.

Stevenage had an excellent chance at the death to nick the points but Cole could not find the target from close range, as his side missed out on the chance to leapfrog their opponents.

Histon 1 Kidderminster 1

Both these sides remain in the play-off places after Keith Lowe’s superb strike earned Kidderminster a valuable point in their quest for promotion.

Jack Midson put Histon on their way after just three minutes, flicking his header past Kidderminster stopper Adam Bartlett from Gareth Gwillim’s corner.

But Harriers were back on level terms when Keith Lowe measured a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the box on 29 minutes.

Kidderminster welcomed back top-scorer Justin Richards and the 20-goal man nearly snatched a win for his side, but in the end the spoils were shared.

Forest Green 4 Rushden & Diamonds 0

Andrew Mangan’s stunning hat-trick inspired Forest Green to their first win in four games as Rushden & Diamonds slipped to their first defeat in five.

Adriano Rigoglioso was the provider for Rovers’ opener, as he crossed for Mangan to slot home from six yards for his 26th goal of the season.

Rigoglioso got his name on the scoresheet on 37 minutes when he arrowed his effort into the bottom left corner.

And with the points already in the bag, Mangan found himself in acres of space after a superb through-ball from Rigoglioso, and he made no mistake on 71 minutes before getting his third from the spot late on.

Kettering 1 Wrexham 0

Teenager Ryan Charles grabbed his first ever goal for Kettering to earn his side a hard-fought victory over fellow mid-table side Wrexham.

Kettering flew out of the blocks and had their noses in front on three minutes when 19-year-old Charles was teed up by former Nottingham Forest forward Craig Westcarr.

Jefferson was guilty of missing an excellent chance to equalise for The Red Dragons but he was foiled by Poppies keeper Lee Harper.

And Jean-Paul Marna nearly added a second for the hosts right at the death, but his vicious long-range effort flew just wide.

York 1 Eastbourne Borough 0

York earned themselves some much-needed breathing space with a hard-fought win over Eastbourne that moved The Minstermen out of the drop zone.

Daniel McBreen found space on the edge of the penalty box on 35 minutes and unleashed a thumping drive into the bottom right-hand corner to put his side ahead.

Richard Brodie had a good chance to add to York’s lead but he fired straight at Sports keeper Lee Hook midway through the second half.

And the hosts were almost made to pay for their missed chances late on when Paul Armstrong had an excellent chance level things up, only for Michael Ingham to make a superb save for York.

Woking 2 Mansfield 2

Robert Duffy netted twice for Mansfield as they came from behind to salvage a point for The Stags and deny Woking three much-needed points.

It was Duffy who broke the deadlock when he was first to Ryan Williams’ 40th minute corner, but that lead did not last long and Colin Miles powered The Cards back onto level terms two minutes later.

Joe Anderson completed the turnaround for the hosts as he converted a superb cross from Joel Ledgister on 67 minutes.

But Duffy struck with just 11 minutes remaining, again latching on to Williams’ cross to deny Woking victory as they slip into the drop zone with just one game to play.

Northwich 3 Lewes 0

John Allan’s excellent double could not stop Northwich joining Lewes in departing the Blue Square Premier next season, despite a comfortable 3-0 win.

Simon Grand put The Vics ahead just after the half-hour mark when he got his head to Joel Byrom’s swinging free-kick.

The hosts did not make the points safe until 13 minutes from time however, when Allan drilled a lot shot into the bottom corner.

And the former Carlisle man had his second of the game just five minutes later when he raced clear and flicked the home from six yards.

Barrow 3 Crawley 3

Nick Rogan’s injury-time strike rescued a point for Barrow in this thrilling six-goal encounter, as the hosts are still looking nervously over their shoulder.

Jamie Cook put Crawley ahead after 19 minutes, drilling the ball home from 12 yards after excellent work from Robbie Matthews.

And Cook has his second of the game 12th of the season on the stroke of half-time, when he rifled home from the spot after Carlos Logan fouled Adam Quinn in the penalty box.

But Rogan pulled a goal back for the hosts before Steve McNulty nodded Barrow level just after the hour mark , and while ex-Arsenal man Isaiah Rankin looked to have won it for The Reds late on, Rogan had other ideas.

Weymouth 0 Ebbsfleet 2

Two quickfire goals for Ebbsfleet was enough for the visitors to seal victory as Weymouth moved to the brink of relegation.

Former Brentford forward Ricky Shakes put Ebbsfleet on their way after just five minutes when pounced on the loose ball and smashed home from close-range.

And Kezie Ibe doubled Fleet’s advantage just five minutes later, leaping to power home Michael West’s swirling cross to put his side in the driving seat.

Shakes might have grabbed his second deep into the second half but Adam Legzdins was equal to his effort, but Weymouth are now two points from safety.

Altrincham 2 Grays 0

Veteran Altrincham forward Colin Little notched his third goal in four games as his side eased to a comfortable victory over Grays.

Little was on hand to rifle home his 17th goal of the season on 23 minutes when Matthew Doughty picked out the former Macclesfield hitman.

And Chris Denham put the result beyond any doubt on 79 minutes, firing home the loose ball after Grays defenders failed to clear their lines.
