PFA Premier League Team of the Year

by Ben Blackmore , 26 April 2009

Six Manchester United players, two Liverpool, one Chelsea, Aston Villa and Portsmouth make up the Team of the Year.

The Red Devils provided one goalkeeper, three defenders and two midfielders at the annual PFA gala, which saw Ryan Giggs named PFA Player of the Year.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Portsmouth completed the XI, named below. Use the link at the bottom to find out who was named Young Player of the Year.

2008/09 Team of the Year:

 GK. Edwin van der Sar

Broke the Premier League record for number of minutes without conceding, plus he leads the race for the Golden Glove by one clean sheet from Jose Reina. An obvious pick for goalkeeper.

 RB. Glen Johnson

Could well become a more sought-after individual than a single Cheryl Cole this summer. Has been excellent at right back all season, and has even shown his class as a right midfielder.

 LB. Patrice Evra

Always a tough call between Evra and Gael Clichy, but United's defensive record makes it impossible not to give Evra the edge between these two attacking full backs.

 CB. Rio Ferdinand

The importance of Rio was summed up in 90 minutes in Portugal. After shipping goals left right and centre without him, United suddenly regained their calm in The Estadio do Dragao - led by an imperious display from the England man.

 CB. Nemanja Vidic

Solid as a rock nearly all season, it seems a shame that this campaign will always be remembered for Vidic's collapse under the class of Fernando Torres. Should not overshadow a series of rock-like performances, plus the odd important goal to boot.

 CM. Steven Gerrard

On for his best goalscoring return of the season, Mr Liverpool has been so good that some have labelled him the best player in the world. If Liverpool fail to land the title, the games Gerrard missed will be rued severely.

 CM. Ryan Giggs

Has failed to start even half of United's games this season, and has been overlooked in all but one of United's five games against their title rivals. Giggs did deliver arguably the defining individual display of the season though, against Chelsea, and that seems to be enough to earn a spot ahead of Frank Lampard.

 LM. Ashley Young

The newly-crowned PFA Young Footballer of the Year and an absolute driving force in Villa's charge for a Champions League spot.

 RM. Cristiano Ronaldo

Nowhere near his best, yet still he is the leading goalscorer in the league. A fully fit Fernando Torres may have changed that fact, but it just goes to show that even a half-baked Ronaldo is too good for the majority of the league.

 ST. Nicolas Anelka

Led the scorers' charts for most of the season, proving once again that he is dynamite when played in his correct position. Will miss out on picking up the golden boot after being jettisoned to the wing...or worse...the bench once again.

 ST. Fernando Torres

How on earth did this guy get votes back in February?! Absolutely deserves his place having smashed 13 league goals in 20 appearances, but he had only bagged five (six in all competitions) when the votes were cast! Still, Giggs got in.
