Betting probe's black and white for Grays

by Tom Kell , 28 April 2009

Grays chairman Mick Woodward has told Setanta that anyone exposed in The FA's betting probe ‘have no place in football’.

The Football Association launched an investigation on Monday after receiving information from bookmakers Blue Square and William Hill over suspicious betting patterns for Grays’ end-of-season game with Forest Green Rovers.

Both bookmakers took an unusual surge of punts on Grays to be losing at half time before then going on to win.

The game, played on Sunday, ended 2-1 to Grays despite their half-time 1-0 deficit.

An inquiry is now ongoing in order to discover whether a deliberate betting ring had been established to ensure the result panned out as it did.

“They’re in a team that could well be tarnished and they’re upset,” Woodward told Setanta Sports News.

“I think it’s only fair for everyone to allow The FA to do their report. The players will have to stand up to be counted because no doubt they will be interviewed.

“As I have said, if any of them are involved they have got no place in football.”
