Torquay booked their place in the Blue Square Premier play-off final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Histon on Monday.
Histon ran out 1-0 winners at the Glassworld Stadium, but The Gulls progressed after winning the home leg 2-0.
On a waterlogged pitch, Histon enjoyed the better of the first half and they broke the deadlock after 16 minutes when midfielder Neil Andrews drilled the ball home after the Torquay defence had failed to deal with a long throw-in.
However, they failed to extend their advantage and the game became increasingly edgy.
The visitors started to look a threat as the home side appeared to run out of energy and, on 70 minutes, Torquay midfielder Wayne Carlisle could have settled the tie, but Patrick Ada was just able to get enough on the ball to avert the danger.
Torquay looked relatively comfortable in the closing stages but, in the 90th minute, Histon caused panic in the area from a corner before Matthew Mitchell-King rattled the crossbar seconds later.
But Torquay held on and will now head to Wembley to face Cambridge United on May 17 for a place in League Two.
And, having lost to Exeter at the same stage last season as well as losing the FA Trophy final shortly afterwards, captain Chris Hargreaves was delighted.
“We defended really well,” he told Setanta. “It was a bit of a war.
“It was extremely physical and they certainly tested us. We couldn’t get on the ball and play.
“The win is a just reward for everybody and all our families. I’m so delighted for the fans after last season.”
