Stevenage secure FA Trophy glory

by Adam Marshall , 09 May 2009

Stevenage ended a disappointing week on a high with a 2-0 victory against York City in the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

Graham Westley's side were knocked out of the play-offs by Cambridge United on Monday in agonising circumstances but recovered their composure to see off York with a determined performance.

Stevenage thoroughly deserved their win with departing skipper Steve Morison and Lee Boylan scoring the second-half goals.

City defended keenly in a disappointing first half but Morison served notice of his intentions with a couple of decent attempts, one well saved by Michael Ingham.

At the other end, Chris Day kept out Adam Boyes and Mark Greaves blazed over.

After the break, Stevenage kept up the pressure as Ingham saved smartly from Peter Vincenti, diving to claw the ball away impressively.

Man-of-the-match Morison bagged his 32nd goal of the season to break the deadlock and sign off in style, prodding home from close range.

Lee Boylan produced a second in stoppage time, latching onto a quick throw-in by Morison and flashing a right-footed volley over Ingham and into the net.

Morison, speaking to Setanta's Rebecca Lowe afterwards, confirmed he is leaving Stevenage.

"Yes, it looks like that," he said. "It was my last game and it's nice to go out with a bang.

"I can't say where I'm going yet but hopefully it is my last game, although you never know what might happen."
