Serie A: Inter's celebrations delayed

by Laurent Picard , 10 May 2009

Inter missed out on the chance to win the Serie A title on Sunday, with Jose Mourinho’s side drawing 2-2 at Chievo.

The Nerazzurri, who are comfortably eight points clear at the top of the league, took the lead through Hernan Crespo at Stadio Marc Antonio Bentegodi, but Michele Marcolini levelled the scoring before the break. Italy Under-21 international Mario Balotelli then offered his side a second lead that was once again wasted when Luciano equalised in the 74th minute.

Second-placed Milan and third-placed Juventus both lost ground on their chase of Inter as they drew 1-1.

Both goals came within three minutes of one another as Clarence Seedorf gave Milan the lead 12 minutes into the second half, before Vincenzo Iaquinta levelled immediately after at the San Siro. The hosts finished the game with ten men when Giuseppe Favalli was sent off five minutes from time.

Fiorentina strengthened their fourth place on Sunday thanks to a massive 2-0 win away at Catania’s Stadio Angelo Massimino, with Stevan Jovetic and Luciano Zauri scoring in both halves.

For their part, fifth-placed Genoa could only rescue a point from their trip to Atalanta's Stadio Azzurri D’Italia, courtesy of a Domenico Criscito last-gasp equaliser that cancelled out Jaime Valdes’ ninth-minute effort.

Sixth-placed Roma bagged a single point from Cagliari, with the Giallorossi claiming a morale-boost after coming back from two goals down. Francesco Totti and Simone Perrotta both scored after the interval, while Alessandro Matri and Robert Aquafresca had given the Sant’Elia outfit the edge.

Promoted Lecce remain inside the danger zone following a 1-1 draw conceded at home to Napoli. The visitors took the lead, courtesy of a Batista Inacio Pia fast break, but Andrea Zanchetta hit back three minutes before the break.

Meanwhile, Emanuele Calaio scored the only goal of the game in Siena’s narrow home win against Palermo, and the six-pointer between Torino and Bologna ended up in a 1-1 draw, with Marco Di Vaio converting a 86th-minute penalty to cancel out Alessandro Rosina’s first-half spot-kick.
