No deal for Cottagers midfielder

by Tom Adams , 24 May 2009

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that he will not pursue a permanent deal for Fulham’s on-loan midfielder Giles Barnes.

The 22-year-old was a surprise signing for The Cottagers in January when joining from Derby County and injuries have prevented him from making his debut for the club.

Barnes was only able to make five appearances for Derby this season prior to moving to Craven Cottage and with his fitness problems persisting, Hodgson is unwilling to pay the sum arranged with The Rams.

"Giles has unfortunately been injured and we haven't had the chance to assess him as we would like," said Hodgson.

"We would not be prepared to pay the amount of money that we would be required to pay at the end of the loan to acquire his services."

Hodgson has also confirmed that fellow midfielder Olivier Dacourt will be leaving the club at the end of his loan move from Inter and that the Frenchman, who also played for Leeds United and Everton in England, is contemplating retirement.

"Olivier came here making it clear he would be here only until the end of the season," Hodgson added.

"I think he's contemplating retirement now, although I'd hope that's not the case as I think he's got a lot more to offer - although it wouldn't be in England due to his family situation."

Fulham have enjoyed a tremendous season under Hodgson and will finish in seventh ahead of Tottenham if they beat Everton on Sunday.

Hodgson has been touted as a potential manager of the season and the former Finland and Switzerland boss has intriguingly claimed he would relish the chance to manage England in the future.

“Being an international manager has a lot of advantages.

“It would be nice to be mentioned again in connection with England. But I think the real chance was either pre-Keegan or pre-Eriksson.”
