Inter and Milan both fell to surprise defeats on the penultimate day of the Serie A season.
Elsewhere, Claudio Ranieri’s successor as Juventus coach, Ciro Ferrara, got his tenure off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over Siena thanks to two goals from Alessandro Del Piero and one from Claudio Marchisio.
That result means Juve are now second after Milan’s 3-2 loss at home to Roma in what was Paolo Maldini’s final game at San Siro.
The visitors twice surrendered leads – given to them by john Arnse Riise and Jeremy Menez – thanks to a Massimo Ambraosini brace but eventually triumphed thanks to Francesco Totti’s 85th-minute winner.
Inter’s title celebrations took a nosedive when they lost 2-1 at Cagliari. Andrea Cossu and Robert Acquafresca did the damage after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had put Jose Mourinho’s side in front.
Fourth place Fiorentina sent Lecce to Serie B with a 1-1 draw that came when Martin Jorgensen cancelled out Simone Tiribocchi’s opener, Felipe Melo was dismissed for The Viola.
Bologna are out of the bottom three after a goalless draw with Chievo while Torino remain deep in trouble after losing 3-2 to Genoa. Inter-bound Diego Milito scored twice and Ruben Oliveira was also on the mark to render irrelevant goals from Ivan Franceschini and Rolando Bianchi. Their task was made all the more difficult by the dismissal of Ignazio Abate.
Gaateno D’Agostino and Felipe scored for Udinese and Antonio Cassano did so for Sampdoria in their 2-2 draw.
Catania were the day’s other winners, beating Napoli 3-1 thanks to goals from Takayuki Morimoto, Giuseppe Mascara and Vito Falconieri. Mariano Bogliacino scored for the visitors, who also had Daniele Mannini sent off.
