Nicholas wants Keane at Celtic

by Gordon Pope , 26 May 2009

Former Celtic star Charlie Nicholas has told the club that Roy Keane is the man to replace Gordon Strachan.

The Hoops are searching for a replacement for the man who led them to three titles in a row and Nicholas believes they need a manager who puts results before finances.

“It’s time to forget all the preoccupation with balance sheets and look at team-sheets,” Nicholas said in The Scottish Daily Express. “It’s time to give the manager the proper resources to run the club - with football success the priority.

“Now Gordon has gone the club faces a stark choice - does it hire someone who would continue to act as a glove puppet of the board or does it go in another direction?

“If the club was willing to look at a five-year plan to properly invest in the club- not bankrupt it, but make some genuine investment - I’d be battering down Roy Keane’s door.

“This is not an Irish thing; it’s nothing to do with having a Celtic fan in charge. This is to do with what is best for Celtic as they try to bounce back from a bad year and change the course of the club.

“Roy would bring knowledge, discipline and brutal honesty. But to convince him Celtic was the club for him you would need to give complete control of the football affairs.

“Celtic need to make football the priority. They are going backwards as a football team and a manager has to be the key man - not the chief executive.”
