We made history, says Guardiola

by Laurent Picard , 28 May 2009

Josep Guardiola has hailed his Barcelona side as ‘mythic’, following their historic season.

The Blaugranas taught Manchester United a footballing lesson on Wednesday and bagged the Champions League thanks to Samuel Eto’o’s opener and Lionel Messi’s header.

Guardiola, in his debut season as Barca’s first-team head coach, has already claimed the Spanish league title and the Copa del Rey.

The former Roma and Brescia midfielder has declared that the Blaugranas deserve their victory over United, and he feels that Messi is the best player in the world.

“We are absolutely delighted,” Guardiola said after the game.

“I want to congratulate the club and the supporters. I must say that we are not the best team in the world, but we are the first one to claim the treble.

“The game was not a fairytale but Eto’o’s and Messi’s goals proved that we were a superior team."

He added: “[Messi] has achieved great things with Barcelona.

"His season has been massive - he has scored many goals, delivered assists, he is the best player in the world and will add his name to the Ballon d’Or list.

“As a player, winning the club’s first Champions League was huge [in 1992] but this treble is fantastic and I am delighted. I must control my emotions.

"We defended well and attacked well against the best team in the world. We have joined the mythic teams [in football’s history].”
