Blues close to Bowyer swoop

by Chris Stanton , 31 May 2009

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is hopeful of converting the loan stay of Lee Bowyer into a permanent transfer.

Bowyer spent the second half of last season on loan at St Andrews from West Ham United and, as Blues bid to glean from a promotion winning squad a team that is capable of staying in the top flight next season, McLeish would like to secure the 32-year-old's signature.

"We are hoping to sign Lee," McLeish said. "We are just waiting on answers from him."

Blues, meanwhile, have made an offer for Ecuador international striker Cristian Benitez

The 23-year-old, who is contracted to Mexican team Santos Laguna, has previously been linked with a move to either Wigan Athletic or Blackburn Rovers.

Benitez's compatriot, the defender Giovanny Espinoza, is another player to have been linked with a move to St Andrews.
