Setanta's end-of-season awards: West Brom

by setanta.com staff , 05 June 2009

Like Darius Vassell's England career, the season is well and truly over, so it's time to dish out the end-of-season gongs.

Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra?

Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION

Player of the season: Chris Brunt. Enigmatic is the best word to describe Albion's winger. He will go whole games contributing absolutely nothing, but when he's on it, he is on it. Brunt's left foot is something to behold and he finished as The Baggies' top scorer with eight goals.

Young player of the season: Ishmael Miller. What may have been a pivotal moment in Albion's campaign was the season-ending injury suffered by the striker in December. Fans had hoped his goal against Blackburn Rovers a couple of weeks before would be a sign of things to come. Unfortunately what actually happened was more first-team appearances for Luke Moore.

Best signing: Jonas Olsson. That we should associate something good with The Baggies' defence is an odd way of looking at things, but just think how much worse it would have been had there been two Shelton Martis's in central defence rather than one. Indeed.

Worst signing: Scott Carson. Narrowly edging out Borja Valero because while the Spaniard was entirely ineffectual, Carson did at least have an influence, albeit an entirely negative one. The fact that the once castigated Dean Kiely returned to the team at the end of the season and was warmly received tells you all you need to know.

Disappointment of the season: Relegation. Okay, that's an obvious one but what must really rankle is that The Baggies took the drop, while the teams they were promoted with last season, Stoke City and Hull City, will remain Premier League players, despite espousing inferior brands of the beautiful game.

Moment of the campaign: Reaction to relegation. The Baggies' applauding of Tony Mowbray even when their team's relegation was confirmed with defeat to Liverpool brought a tear to their manager's normally stony face.
