Newcastle expecting offers 'in short order'

by Robin Hackett , 07 June 2009

Newcastle expect to receive offers for the club in the near future, according to the chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce.

Owner Mike Ashley has again placed the club on the market following their relegation from the top flight and it is believed the valuation has now been drastically reduced.

And Seymour Pierce chairman Keith Harris, who has again been hired by owner Ashley to broker the deal, believes the interest is ‘real and decent’ this time around after deals with foreign consortia failed to materialise last year.

"I'm confident there will be offers to consider in quite short order," Harris told Radio 5 Live.

"It's a decent guess that there are two or three interested parties."

He added: "There is real and decent interest. This is not necessarily from far flung parts of the globe and those expressing interest when it was first marketed, but this is good, gritty interest.

"Newcastle had an awful season and got relegated so that has an implication for the value of an asset of a decrease to make it more attractive."

Reports on Sunday suggested Alan Shearer’s future at St James’ Park is in serious doubt as his relationship with Ashley deteriorates, but Harris feels there is a chance he could remain.

"Shearer is obviously a very charismatic figure in the area and Newcastle need some local interest," he said.

"He is a good commercial addition, certainly in terms of generating interest among the fans.

"Whether he is the right man to lead the club back into The Premier League is something other people will express a view on, especially if there is going to be a change of ownership."
