Eric Cantona has called on the Premier League big guns to do more to help football at a grass roots level, in an exclusive interview with Setanta Sports News.
The former Manchester United striker-turned-actor, who was visiting non-league Bath City while promoting his latest film Looking for Eric, believes non-league clubs are suffering while the top flight creams off the cash.
Cantona, who won league titles at both Leeds and Manchester United, says small clubs play a crucial social role in communities and football has a responsibility towards ensuring the money from the higher echelons of the game trickles down throughout the sport.
He told Setanta Sports News: “Teams like Bath should have some of the money that is paid to the highest level.
“TV pays a lot of money for football but football is not only The Premier League. Football is very important for youth socially and for the community.
“It is a very popular sport and it is very important for the education of the young.”
