Exclusive: Beckford will only go to top side

by Robin Hackett , 08 June 2009

Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford will only consider a move to a Premier League or top-end Championship club, his agent has told setanta.com.

The 25-year-old striker, who has one year left on his current deal, is on the transfer list at Elland Road after he rejected a new contract.

Everton, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Barnsley, Doncaster, Coventry, Peterborough and Scunthorpe are among the sides to have been linked, and agent Nick Rubery believes the majority of that interest is real.

There are currently three official enquiries on the table but no firm offers and, while Rubery says Beckford would welcome a move to many of the sides mentioned, he says the player would be happy to see out his contract at Leeds.

“We have an agreement with Leeds that they’ll tell us about any offers,” he told setanta.com.

“They’ve had three official enquiries but I don’t think they’ll get a firm offer for a good week or two simply because a lot of people are on holiday.

“I can’t really talk about specific clubs but, as far as I’m aware, the names that have been mentioned are all interested.

“At the end of the day, someone has to make an offer that fits the club’s valuation of a player who has done what he’s done – but then they have to balance that with the fact he has 12 months left on his current deal.

“He won’t consider anything other than a top-end Championship club or a Premier League club because Leeds are still a huge side.

“If he needs to, he’ll stay at Leeds for another year.”

Chaiman Ken Bates has already confirmed that Leeds would be happy to retain Beckford next season if they cannot agree a suitable deal.

“We are in no hurry,” he told the club’s official website.

"Jermaine is with us until June 2010 and, if we don't get what we consider to be a reasonable offer, we'll keep him.”
