Exclusive: Spurs ace in transfer talks

by Laurent Picard , 10 June 2009

Setanta.com understands that Giovani dos Santos is in talks to join Espanyol on a loan basis.

The Mexico international surprisingly left Barcelona after a promising debut season and joined Totenham, where he failed to establish himself as a first team regular player.

Espanyol are about to start a new era under young manager Mauricio Pochettino, with the Spanish club moving to a new stadium in El Prat, and the Barcelona club have contacted Spurs in order to welcome Giovani this summer.

Their sporting director Ramon Planes is believed to be in talks with Spurs regarding a one-year loan deal plus a £5 million buy-out clause.

For his part, the attacker would be delighted to return to Barcelona, where he spent his younger days, and he has declared that his future is in Harry Redknapp’s hands.

“I need more time of play and it appears to be quite complicated with Tottenham at the present time,” Dos Santos said.

“Perhaps sending me on loan to the Spanish league can prove a positive move, but Spurs are the ones to decide.

“I did speak with the club and they are aware of my desire. And a Mexican club is also interested in me, but what I want to do is continue in England or return to Spain.”
