Capello cautious after Wembley romp

by Toby Davis , 10 June 2009

Fabio Capello was taking nothing for granted after England moved to within one victory of achieving World Cup qualification.

Capello’s side brushed aside minnows Andorra 6-0 at Wembley to move ten points clear of Croatia at the top of Group Six.

Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe each scored twice while Frank Lampard and Peter Crouch were also on target.

The win leaves England within touching distance of wrapping up a spot in next summer’s finals but Capello insists there is still work to be done.

He told ITV: "You have to win another game to be sure of going to South Africa.

He added: "We have created a group. This is important, the spirit of the group. We always play to win."

Capello also had words of praise for supporters who had found their way to Wembley despite the tube strike.

He said: "I am very happy for the fans, very happy for the people that stayed here. I am happy today."

England midfielder Frank Lampard felt Wednesday night’s performance showed the side had found themselves under boss Capello.

He said : "It was not as easy as it looked that game - they just sat back.

"We've found ourselves as a group. We always knew we had the individuals but were not working as a team.

"You can see the results on the pitch."

While full back Glen Johnson claimed confidence within the camp was sky-high.

"Morale couldn't be any higher," he said. "I think that showed out there today."
