McGinn has master plan

by Brian Etherson , 14 June 2009

Celtic winger Niall McGinn is looking forward to pre-season training and sees it as an opportunity to impress the new manager as he bids to establish himself in the first team.

McGinn arrived in January but has yet to make his debut for the club, and with a second-half appearance against Italy last week, the midfielder’s thoughts have turned towards next season even though he has just embarked on his annual summer break.

Pre-season training is due to start in just over two weeks, but McGinn reckons that may change when a new manager is appointed at Celtic Park.

"I assume there will be a new manager in place by the time I come back," McGinn said. “It's the board's decision but whoever it is, the players will all be starting from scratch.

"We are meant to report back for training on July 1 but maybe the new manager will change that.

"However, whenever we get back I will hope to make an impression on him.

"We are all out to prove ourselves, especially myself because I came to Celtic late last season.

"It was difficult for me when I first arrived because I had lost six or seven weeks of fitness beforehand.

"So I am looking forward to getting in a full pre-season and I want to be 100 percent fit to give myself every chance.

"Hopefully, I will get some of the pre-season games and then get some games in the SPL, if I do get the opportunity, it will be down to me to impress and the rest of the boys will have to do the same."
