Vidic plays his part in Milijas' move

by Tom Kell , 16 June 2009

New boy Nenad Milijas has pinpointed Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic as a major factor in his decision to move to Wolves.

Wolves’ protracted pursuit of Milijas from Crvena Zvezda finally came to an end on Monday when the club announced the completion of their first summer signing – subject to a work permit.

Milijas’ international pedigree during Serbia’s thus far impressive World Cup 2010 qualification campaign added to the lure for Mick McCarthy.

However, it is Milijas’ international compatriot Vidic who played a pivotal role in persuading him to ignore the advances of the likes of Roma, CSKA Moscow and Borussia Dortmund to move to Molineux.

“I’m very good friends with Nemanja, who is a great guy and such an important player for Serbia,” Milijas said on Wolves’ official website. “I spoke with him before agreeing to move and he just told me to come.

“He said everything is great for football here and he told me ‘just come and see and after that you will stay’.

“I know how he is thought of in England and it’s good for Serbia to have a player like that here.

“You can’t play for Red Star Belgrade if you can’t play under pressure. Fans want Red Star to win the league every season and if it doesn’t happen for a year, you have a problem.

“I don’t fear pressure, I’m just putting myself under pressure to try to help Wolves make a good start. If we can get some good results in the first three or four games, I think it will really help us.”
